The very best way to learn astrology is to observe how planetary configurations play out in actual events. National and international events that make the evening news make great fodder because they are so well documented.
So we convene our class in Astrology 101 by taking a look at the Sun/Saturn opposition. To illustrate how this configuration plays out we will use the example of the House's vote for passage of the health care reform package on March 21, 2010 when the Sun/Saturn opposition was exact.
An opposition shows the fruits of the actions started when the two planets were conjunct.
Providing universal health benefits to Americans has been attempted without success by presidents going back to Teddy Roosevelt. The current initiative, like others, has been beset by intense opposition.
In the meantime, increasing numbers of Americans are unable to buy or afford health insurance, and as a result have severely limited access to the healthcare system. The situation has deteriorated to the point where health care has become increasingly expensive and uninsured and underinsured people have been ruined financially because of illness.
On March 21, 2010, the House of Representatives voted on the Senate proposal brokered by Sen. Max Baucus at the time that Sun opposed Saturn. The vote's effect is to make the health care reform package the law of the land.
When a planet, in its travels, occupies the same degree of the zodiac as another planet, we have a 'conjunction.' A new moon is an example of a conjunction with the Sun and the Moon. It also initiates the monthly lunar cycle.
Every conjunction begins a cycle involving the two bodies involved. The cycle will reflect the energies of the two planets involved and it will go through predictable phases.
As the Sun and Saturn formed a conjunction on September 16th, Sen. Max Baucus and his committee presented their proposal to the full Senate.
After the conjunction, the planets separate as they continue their respective orbits. One planet moves faster than the other. Eventually they will be 90 degrees away from each another. When this occurs, it is called a 'square.' In the lunar cycle this is also called a 'quarter moon.'
Squares are a point of crisis. This is when the 'seed' planted at the time of the conjunction becomes visible like the first green shoots of a plant.
And just as the new plant has to fight to break through the surface of the earth, the square is when your efforts are likely to be tested.
At the Sun/Saturn square occurring at the Christmas holidays, the full Senate voted and passed Sen. Baucus's proposal.
Finally on March 21st the Sun and Saturn are now exactly 180 degrees from each other. They have reached opposite sides of the zodiac. This position is called an 'opposition' and it is equivalent to the full moon.
At the time of an opposition, you reap the fruits of what you've sown at the conjunction.
As I write this article, the House is voting on the Senate's version of the bill. They will then use the arcane budget reconciliation maneuver to clean off some rough edges.
By the time you read this, the bill will be the law of the land.
You can apply this example to your own life. If a significant event happened at the time of an opposition, look back to the time when the two planets were conjunct and see what was happening. There you will find its root. In a one-to-one astrological consultation you can explore your life in more detail so you can gain a deeper understanding and take power over it.
