Passages: Hollyhocks on the Garden Wall

Passages: Hollyhocks on the Garden Wall Review

Passages: Hollyhocks on the Garden Wall Overview

To say "death is a part of life" does nothing to ease the reality, coming home to a house, no one there to come home to, having experiences but no one to share them with. An empty chair at the table, the empty side of the bed, everywhere -- empty. No razor on his side of the sink (or cosmetics on her side), the empty hole in your heart.

Louise Netherton had been married almost fifty-seven years when her husband lost his battle with cancer. Advised in grief counseling to keep a journal, an overwhelming torrent of emotions flowed into words.

In sharing her experiences of loss through journal excerpts and poetry, Louise hopes to provide comfort to others who are grieving.

Drawing With The Help of Visualization

Most pieces of artwork start with an outline drawing whether you are going to do a watercolor painting, portrait, pet portrait, landscape or seascape. Outline drawings are used as an effective tool to start simple sketching, cartooning, can be used for the beginning stages of a detailed realistic drawing for a fine art piece . There are several ways to start an outline drawing, you can free hand the drawing or use a grid if you are confident to free hand.

Whether you are free handing a drawing or using a grid you have to see the whole picture of what you want to draw. The best way to see the whole picture is to visualize what you want to draw. With visualization you start to train your eyes to see what is really there, not just what you think is there. You see, feel and understand the whole package of what you are drawing.

The question you have to ask yourself is do you want a flat one-dimensional drawing or would you rather have a drawing that portrays curves, texture, and feeling with character?

Take a piece of paper and trace your hand like you did when you were young. You are seeing a hand, right? Is that hand flat and is it just one-dimensional? Does that traced hand show the years of wear and tear, the wrinkles or is it a young hand that has just started out experiencing life? With out lines, shadows, highlights and details there is no story to that drawing so your drawing is lacking the pull and the energy to keep someone's interest. When you draw you need to tell a story, you need to pull the observer into the drawing. If the observer is looking at the hand you sketched, that observer needs to feel the pain or the softness of that hand, is it a farmer's hand that has tilled the soil and is weathered from the years in the sun? With just a simple drawing you can show the entire story that goes with the hand you are drawing.

If the sketch of that hand is done with a graphite pencil, the observer is not going to see the coloring of the hand and whether the hand is tanned from the sun. But they can see the wrinkling, scars and calluses that you have portrayed and the observer will visualize that the hand is tanned and callused. You can show the highlights and the shadows making the hand look rounded and curved.

As you look at your own hand, move your fingers, look how the skin wrinkles, where are the deep creases, where do the shadows start and end. How are the muscles and the bone structure formed?

Here is an easy exercise to help you start seeing like an artist sees before doing a drawing. Let your hand rest comfortably on your leg, table or counter in a well-lit area. Sit and focus on your relaxed hand thinking what is the first step to drawing my hand. What do I see? How many lines can you see on your thumb, how do they curve, bend, now look at the rest of your hand and count the lines. Look for the shadows and highlights. Do you see more lines than you ever anticipated or are the smoother than you thought? When you think of drawing your hand you may have not envisioned the hundreds of small lines, the hard edges and the soft edges that make up the form of our hand. Look and see the object not the hand that you are so familiar with, look for the story that your hand tells. Now that you are seeing the lines, shapes and structure, you stopped thinking about your hand and started seeing the lines.

Another exercise is to look at a piece of fabric that is lying on a table or on the back of your couch. That fabric has curves, folds, bends and contours. It is not a flat object just lying there. When you go to draw that piece of fabric, you need to sculpture it to the lay of the land, the form of the object up against, the shadows and the highlights that make it look realistic. Try taking a photo of the fabric, and then use a grid to redraw the fabric using a graphite pencil; you will be amazed how realistic your drawing will become.

Learn to see the makeup of the piece you want to draw, visualize the object, get your head inside the object and now put the lines that you visualize down on paper. You will be amazed at what you are drawing.

Clockwork Angel Book Review - Infernal Devices Series

Clockwork Angel is the first of The Infernal Devices series, which takes place during the time of Queen Victoria. The world is full of mundanes - humans, Downworlders - vampires, warlocks, etc..., Demons, and Shadowhunters - cross between angels & humans that have one purpose, to kill Demons.

The book follows Tessa Gray, a young American who comes to England to be reunited with her only living relative, her brother Nathaniel. When she arrives in port, her brother is nowhere to be found but has left a note entrusting her in the care of two elderly, odd-looking women. The women take her, and she becomes their prisoner and student. She learns that she has the magical ability to Change, to take on the form of the living and the dead. They force her to do this painful process over and over, telling her that if she obeys her brother will be released and they will be reunited. She goes along with their plan until she learns she will be marrying the Magister. Her attempt to escape fails miserably, but she is soon rescued by Shadowhunters and taken to their Institute. The Shadowhunters teach her about London's Downworld, and the nature of things going on around her. They promise to help her find her brother, which leads them to suspicious activity of Downworlders they thought were allied with them.

I see a lot of similarities between this series and the Mortal Instruments series - the main character being a strong girl with a special ability, two boys (in this case both Shadowhunters) that are drawn to her, and a last minute heroic act by the main character. The book was entertaining enough, and quick to read. The book has some humor which kept the plot moving, although the villain was somewhat of a disappointment in the end. If you're a fan of YA Fiction, you'll probably enjoy this book.

The Pigman and Me, by Paul Zindel - Biography

Paul Zindel must have felt compelled by an irresistible force to expound upon a childhood that in a biography reads as well as his novels. Paul and Betty could just as well have been John and Lorraine just as Nonno Frankie became Angelo Pignati. Staten Island becomes as familiar as home just as the streets and avenues score themselves into our memories as the carvings on the desks we saw 280 days of each year in our own schools.

Zindel's family problems are reflected mirror-like in those of John and Lorraine, but other less personal problems, like racism and poverty (if they can be considered less personal than family) erupt with the clarity and lucidity of a sucker-punch. The combining of the two families under one roof is unusual but not unheard of just as the depiction of small town residents as zombies is obviously hyperbolic, yet, to some degree, credible.

Nonno Frankie's concern for the life of the apple tree symbolizes the deeper truths that form the foundation for moral behavior and stands majestically as a tribute to the lasting permanence of integrity that transcends the passing changes that overtake children in their pursuit of identity and the meaning of life. His incessant humor revives memories of undying, childish frivolousness so necessary for the bonding of friendships among children. Something has to offset the constant flood of disappointments and hurts that flow from the novelty of growing up in a strange and threatening environment. Nonno's pranks to wake up the zombies were analogous to the antics of John in the classroom, the mischievous behavior that should expected of normal, growing, young adults.

Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction. If I were to include more than twenty Lassies in a story, it would be regarded as beyond belief. But, I did have twenty borzois at one time; so, the prospect is not inconceivable. Paul Zindel's life as described supports the credo that one should write based on experience. But, that does not undermine the potential for exercising extensive creativity that stretches the imagination beyond the threshold of belief through the willing suspension of disbelief. Fiction knows no bounds.

Evaluation: This biography is not essential to understand the novels that grew from Paul Zindel's experiences, but it helps to understand the mind that created the Pigman which itself personifies a universal ideology. The reading level is lower than the novels and far easier to understand. Hence, I see this narrative as a good basis for teaching characterization, setting, and dialogue as well as the idea of biographical sketches. The tone is simple and reader-friendly with enough humor to make the reading a pleasure rather a chore.

Recommendation: For the slow reader, this would be a motivating text to offer tasty tid-bits of the humor, philosophy, adventure, and emotional involvement that are more extensively offered in the novels of Paul Zindel. I would use it even for non-readers as a tool to break the shell of apathy since it would work well as story-telling material. It is not so much an autobigraphy as it is a preparatory statement to give pertinent background to answer inevitable questions.

Teaching: For advanced readers, I would use this as supplemental background information that confirms the tenet that good writing comes from real experiences. For less motivated readers, this text and styles lends itself well to emulation so that minimal success will reap greater rewards.

Inspirational Bible Verses - Ancient Love Poems

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There's a really interesting and inspirational Bible passage that comes from the book titled The Song of Solomon in the Old Testament of the Bible. The reason why I find it so fascinating is because it's basically just an ancient love poem from a king to a common woman who he wants to wed. There's a specific section in the book that I find especially interesting and want to share. I hope you like it as well. Here it is in the old King James version:

"For love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned."

The passage comes from the 8th and final chapter of the book and is something like a conclusion to the poem. I find it very interesting and inspirational because it's not at all the kind of verse that a person expects to find in the Bible, especially in the Old Testament.

I've really enjoyed having the chance to read a lot of ancient poetry. I've read the ancient Chinese book the Tao Te Ching many times and really connect with it. I've also read a lot of the poetry of the ancient Persian poet Rumi. Ancient poetry is so much different than the poetry found in the modern world. It isn't necessarily that the people living then were different than we are today, but the world and the way they saw the world was much more mysterious, dangerous, and unknown than the world that we live in today.

The Bible in actuality, has multiple books of poetry, like the book of Psalms for example, and when translating these books of ancient poetry it really seems as though the translators were concentrated more on being strictly accurate than they were about capturing the original beauty and poetic nature of the text. In ancient texts like the Tao Te Ching, modern English translations have spent much effort and diligence in trying to capture the poetic value of the poems, even trying to rhyme in English when it suits the text.

From my understanding, no one has yet tried to do something like this with the book of Psalms in the Bible. I really wish that a concerted effort would be made to do something like that because, as you saw in the passage I listed above, the Bible has a very poetic value to it at times, and that value is most often sacrificed in lieu of translational accuracy. But if a piece of text was meant to be read in a poetic fashion and that poetic value gets lost in the translation, then why does a person even bother translating the text in the first place?

Poetry is considered a mechanism for eliciting an emotional response from the reader. The words themselves are important, but in the strictest sense, if the right emotional response wasn't elicited while the reader reads the poetry, then the actual message wasn't conveyed. Otherwise, there's really no reason to communicate in poetic language. But most of what I've seen from the book of Psalms has been from persons who don't seem to necessarily care about keeping the original poetic value of the words intact. I hope one day that someone endeavors to undertake that project.

Tips to Save Money With Alternative Energy and House Solar Power

As gas prices soar utility bills rise as well. Natural disasters are occurring more and more shutting down power for days or weeks. With alternative energy sources such as solar power and wind power you do not need to worry about such issues. Solar energy, power from the sun, is free and inexhaustible. Learn to set up house solar power today.

With the ever increasing costs of living there is no better time then right now to start producing our own electricity. Whether you want to simply reduce your power bills or completely eliminate them, it couldn't be easier.

You will save hundreds of dollars a month... and thousands of dollars a year... for the rest of your life. Some people switching to solar power have been able to slash their electricity bill by 80% or more! Solar energy is also the cheapest way to generate renewable energy. You will be able to protect your pocket book during these recession times and spend money on more important things.

You will have a lot of fun in building your own power systems. You can do it with your close friends and family during a week-end and everyone will enjoy it.

The savings can typically pay for a solar system in one month's time. Plus, the fuel is free, with no moving parts, the cells require little upkeep and because they burn no fuel and have no moving parts, solar systems are clean and silent. Another great reason to install a renewable energy system in your home is that you will increase the value of your home by thousands!

You will be able to go completely off-grid if you want, knowing that rising energy prices will not affect you. Also, you could possibly be able to make the electricity company pay you, because the surplus of what you produce will make the meter go the other way, in case you want to stay on-grid. What? Your probably wondering right now, but it's true. Most electric companies utilize net metering, which means your electricity meter can run forwards and backwards. When you produce more power than you use at any given moment, the meter runs backwards as you send the excess back to the grid and effectively sell that power back to your power company. (They pay or credit you at exactly the same price per KWh they charge you). For the average customer this results in significant reductions in their electricity bill, though some generate more total power than they use and receive a payment from the electric company.

Most people are unaware that solar cells and wind power can be used to power up basically any appliance you have in your home: fridge, washing machine, computer, TVs, lights. While others wonder if solar energy really works. Ponder this...solar cells were originally developed for use in space, where repair is extremely expensive, if not impossible. To this day solar energy still powers nearly every satellite circling the earth because it operates reliably for long periods of time with virtually no maintenance.

Mascot to the Rescue! By Peter David - A Review

At Demarest Elementary School, Kelsey Markus, new to sixth grade, meets Josh Miller in a rather amazing way. She doesn't know at first that Josh has a secret but it doesn't take her long to suspect something! Comic book hero Captain Major's sidekick, Mascot, is really Josh Miller, or so Josh thinks. But what else would one think when everything that happens to Captain Major's sidekick Mascot, begins to happen to Josh?

Kelsey doesn't think her new school experience will be much different from her last school as she is a bit overweight and often teased about it, and yet on her first day, she is defended by Mascot--Josh! When some boys begin to pick on her on the playground, Mascot jumps down from a tree to rescue her. A squabble begins and suddenly the coach appears and hauls Josh off to the principal, Mrs. Farber, or Misstermind as she is known to Mascot!

Kelsey and Josh become friends and although Kelsey finds the Magic Marker drawn masked Mascot interesting, she tells Josh she is more interested in the secret identities of superheroes. But, Kelsey is kind and listens like a good friend when Josh reveals his secret to her about how everything that happens to Mascot in the comic books with Captain Major, happens to him. However, when the readers of this popular comic take an online survey and decide that Mascot should die in the upcoming issue to be released, Josh realizes he must save Mascot, and himself!

Josh and Kelsey, or Large Lass which is now Kelsey's alter-ego, set out to find Stan Kirby who is the creator of Captain Major so that they can get him to change the outcome in the next edition before it is printed and something happens to Josh. The story draws from reality with the teachers, police, single parents, and even social services workers and blends them with the comic book characters as the story comes to a fun and frantic climax as the two parts, fact and fiction, meet!

The story itself alternates through the narrative from Josh and Kelsey to Mascot and Large Lass. The reader has to accept the story for what it is, a bit of magic mixed with the real story and then will find it a satisfying read. Recommended for ages 9-11 and especially for comic book fans. The drawings give the book the real comic book feel and will be enticing to young readers of this genre.

Atlas Shrugged (Cliffs Notes) Overview

Who is John Galt? This famous rhetorical question rings through Ayn Rand's best-selling novel as the people's anthem of despair in depressed economic times. Set in the future, the novel follows capitalist magnates as they battle looters, strikers, and the impending ruin of the United States' economy. The romantic and intellectual relationship between Dagny Taggart, the heroine, and John Galt, whose identity as the leader of the strike is eventually revealed, carries the novel to its climax.

This novel, controversial when it first appeared in 1957, purports Rand's objectivist philosophy that the individual is free to pursue his or her own happiness without bowing to God or society. Objectivism in action upholds full laissez-faire capitalism as the only philosophy that can protect humankind's freedom to think, to be inventive, and to live productively.

Swimming in Debt - Seek the Help of a Bankruptcy Lawyer

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Many people are forced to file bankruptcy each year, often due to no real fault of their own. It is all too easy to go into debt when you are working and making good money, but what happens if you suddenly fall ill and are unable to work for an extended period of time? What happens if your job is outsourced, and you are unable to find another job that can completely replace your income? Chances are, if this happens to you, you will be harassed by your creditors, from 8am to 9pm every night, you will receive threatening letters in the mail, and your mortgage and automobile lien holders may threaten foreclosure and repossession, your health may decline even farther due to the stress caused by this, your marriage may suffer or even fall apart, and in the end, you will likely end up having to file bankruptcy, just to get some peace and quiet back into your life. You didn't go into debt just to see what you could buy and then file bankruptcy on all of your creditors, but, through no fault of your own, that is what you have to do.

Once you decide that yes, bankruptcy is the best route for you to take, then you should seek the help of a professional bankruptcy lawyer. If you have close friends or family members that you are comfortable talking about your finances with, let them know what you are contemplating, and see if they can refer you to someone they have dealt with, or have heard other people say good things about. When you go in for a consultation, especially if the bankruptcy lawyer is in a firm, you will want to find out who will be handling your bankruptcy case, will this bankruptcy lawyer take it, or will he pass it on to someone else in the firm? Find out how much money you will be charged by the bankruptcy lawyer for his services, and any extra money that will be needed to pay fees that may be encountered along the way, so there are no surprises, and so that you can save up the amount of money required. Anytime you are seeking legal help, you should choose a bankruptcy lawyer that you feel as though you can trust, and who will work very hard to get you want you are seeking.

You can file bankruptcy on your own, without the services of a bankruptcy lawyer, but it will take you quite a bit of time and hard work on your part, and if you are already stressed, may only add to that stress level. You will encounter several decisions that have to be made along the way, and if you make the wrong one, you could end up having your bankruptcy declined by the court.

There are many new laws regarding the filing of bankruptcy, put into effect to help protect creditors from those people who go into debt just to gain items they want, often with credit cards, and then turn around and file bankruptcy, rather than paying their balances off. So, again, you should probably seek legal council, unless you are familiar with the new changes, and are comfortable doing it all yourself.

PC to Phone - Making International Calls Cheaper

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With the passage of time, the Internet has become all pervasive. People in the present day world are dependent on the web as much for accessing information as for their daily dose of entertainment. However, the most recent application of the Internet pertains to communication. Cheap long distance calls are now possible due to the emergence of Internet telephony and PC to phone solutions.

People across the globe are using their personal computers, an Internet connection and latest VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services to make cheap long distance calls. This way, they do not have to pay exorbitantly for communicating with their near and dear ones, located in different parts of the globe. A number of Internet telephony companies are coming up which offer innovative PC phone solutions to cater to this growing demand.

There are quite a few merits of using PC-to-phone solutions. The overall quality of PC to Phone calls is satisfactory, especially when the same is delivered over a broadband connection. The savings one can accrue using VoIP PC to phone solutions are significant, especially if one has the habit of making frequent long distance international calls. Moreover, some other Internet and telecommunication services are made available that users can access in addition to the telephony solutions. E-mail, voice mail, faxing and video conferencing are some of these specialised services - which are made available to the subscribers at industry leading costs. In addition, the security issues are well taken care of by the service providers and users generally do not have any reason to worry.

However, the degree of congestion on the Internet when a person dials could have an adverse impact on the call quality. The installation of the right equipment would take care of this problem. A computer equipped with a fast processor would suit the bill perfectly. A sound card that allows both the parties to communicate at the same time and a headset with a built-in microphone would also go a long way in improving call quality. The headset would reduce the echoes caused by feedback from speakers.

Last but not the least, PC-to-phone solutions from a reputed VoIP Solution provider is often the best bet. One can then make cheap international calls at unbeatable prices; and the net phoning experience is guaranteed to be more than satisfactory.

Awakening the Divine within#Part1#

Entheogen: Awakening the Divine Within is an 80 minute documentary concerning ecological awareness, evolution of consciousness, and the revival of shamanism. What do ancient rites of passage have to do with our ecological crisis? What do dancing and festivals have to do with the collective consciousness? Stan Grof, Ralph, Metzner, Marilyn Schlitz, and Barabara Marx Hubbard among others, postulate how the disenchantment brought about by the scientific method has created our current ecological crisis and how the emergence of the technosphere has made available the next leap in the evolution of consciousness

Alaskan Cruise Vacation Packages: The Inside Passage and Beyond!

An Alaskan cruise is a great way to see the awesome beauty of the Inside Passage, as well as an opportunity to experience on shore excursions. You can sail from Vancouver to Anchorage and sail from seven to eleven days. During this time you'll see wonderful vistas and be able to try the many activities available on land.

Ketchikan is the most southern port of call. The town is built on wood pilings and is the Salmon Capital of the World. Take a historical tour, kayak, bike, fly fish or explore on motorcycle. See the world's largest collection of totem poles.

As you sail north, take in Juneau, settled at the foot of the mountains. Here you can explore a rainforest, kayak, or try a dog sled ride. You can take a helicopter up for a hike or "flightsee" aboard a plane. Of course you can just take the day and go fishing or whale watching.

Nothing can describe the Inside Passage, home to sixteen glaciers. Witness large chunks of ice "calving" off the glaciers, creating icebergs as you cruise by. The Inside Passage has 1,000 island and 15,000 miles of shoreline. Surely you will see some of the 25,000 brown bear or some of the 15,000 Bald Eagles who live there.

Check out Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park in Skagway and Haines. During the gold rush these areas were a city of 20,000 tents. One of the oldest railroads runs here. Jet ski and boat trips are available, as well as rafting and helicopter rides to the glaciers.

In the National Park you will sail past Hubbard glacier, College Fjord, and Tracy Arm. Hubbard glacier moves faster than any other glacier, earning it's nickname the "galloping glacier." It's the largest tidewater glacier in North America. Tracy Arm is 26 miles long. Here you will see rainforests, 7,000 ft. mountain peaks, and vertical rock. This is home to seals, whales and bears.

Visit the historic town of Seward. On a clear day you may see the top of Mt. McKinley. In Denali try dog sledding, river rafting, guided horseback tours and hikes.

An Alaskan cruise vacation package has it all; the amenities of the cruise ship, wildlife, awesome views, and exciting excursions. This is one trip that will deliver!

Joinery Experts Make Troublesome Staircases a Thing of the Past

If you live in an old house or one with a certain amount of character, you may well have a staircase that seems to have a life of its own. Creaks, cracks and wobbles are common in staircases throughout the country, yet when did you ever actually have a serious think about doing something about them? Wouldn't it be nice to be able to walk down the stairs without wobbly handrails making it a white knuckle ride? Or how about making a real feature of your staircase to highlight and enhance your home?

A professional joinery company is the trade to call upon if you are considering doing just this.

Renovating an Old Staircase

Wobbly, worn out handrails that no longer fit the essence of the home or broken and missing spindles can easily be replaced by a joinery expert, as can individual steps. No matter what type of wood you desire, the joinery professional will be able to meet all your requirements and of course will be on hand to advise on the best type of material and finish to go for in your situation.

New Designs

Perhaps your staircase doesn't really work with the rest of the home's layout? Maybe you'd benefit from relocating it? Or bringing it up to date to match your current décor.

A joinery expert will make detailed plans and present you with a solution that will be attractive and practical. The sign of a good local joiner is that he will be able to create bespoke designs that are sensitive to the character of your home but at the same time long lasting and practical, making good use of the materials available. It is also a good sign if the staircase is designed and pre-fitted in a special workshop before installation to reduce the risk of problems arising onsite.

Suggestions For A Fledgling Libertarian

For someone interested in Libertarian philosophies and principles there is a plethora of sources to learn and expand your knowledge. Libertarians hold that America was founded on Libertarian principles. The Constitution spelled out a limited role for the government, much more decentralized than today. Much has been written expounding on Libertarian ideas,as well as Conservative and Classical Liberal ones. All these philosophies should be studied, because they frequently cross over with each other and promote many of the same ideas and ideals. What follows is a short list of resources that would be extremely helpful for any budding Libertarian.

1. Radicals For Capitalism is a newer book by Brian Doherty and an excellent read. It traces the history of Libertarianism thru most of the twentieth century. Focusing on some of the main players within the Libertarian movement, some well known and some not so well known outside of Libertarian circles. This is a great starting point for anyone interested in learning about Libertarianism. It gives a well documented history and mostly insider viewpoint of the Libertarian movement, its players and the subsequent effects on the country. It's also a great place to get ideas for even more in-depth study.

2. The Anti-Federalist Papers (and the Constitutional Convention Debates). The 1760's thru the 1780's was a fascinating time full of vigorous debate. The numerous issues that were being argued and the compromises that were being made are important subjects to be familiar with. While many involved people read the Federalist Papers, they frequently overlook the Anti-Federalist Papers, much to their own detriment. This country was founded on many Libertarian principles and the topics being discussed around the time of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitutional debates are must reads.

3. The Conservative Mind is a book by Russell Kirk. While Kirk believed in many Classical Liberal ideas he was considered a Conservative and many see him as the father of the modern conservative movement. This book and his other various writings should be studied.

4. Anything by William Buckley is worth reading not just for his insights but also his wonderful wit. More well known then Kirk, Buckley is the person most people associate with the popularity of the Conservative movement, although he had many Libertarian leanings. One of the more surprising (for conservatives) was his promotion of drug legalization. Anything written by Buckley is well worth the time.

5. The Road To Serfdom by F.A. Hayek is an often referenced book by Libertarians. Its main theme is a warning against government central planning. In pointing out the evils of Totalitarian governments and Socialism Hayek is considered by many to be one of the top Economists and Philosophers of the Twentieth century.

Preparing for the TOEFL: Integrating Skills

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The most important thing to understand about the format of the TOEFL is this: there are four skill-based sections (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), but many questions require you to integrate these skills - that is, use more than one skill together.

If you think about how we use language, it is logical to test academic English this way. You often speak and listen at the same time when you have a conversation. You also might talk about something you heard on the radio or TV, or you talk with a classmate about the lecture you just heard. When you write a research paper, you paraphrase and explain information you have read; if you give a presentation, you speak about information you may have read.

Here are the types of questions you will see in each section of the TOEFL. Notice that some require you to use one skill, and some require you to integrate skills. The speaking and writing sections in particular include many integrated skill tasks.

Reading
You will read 3-5 passages from university textbooks on different subjects. Each passage is followed by 12-14 questions, and there are three types of questions:

Comprehension - These are multiple-choice questions about the reading that include main ideas, vocabulary used in the passage, pronoun references, and inferences.
Inserting a sentence - You will be given a sentence that fits into the passage and asked to choose the best place to put it. This tests your understanding of the organization of the passage.
Reading to learn - For these questions, you will be asked to choose sentences to create a summary of the passage or sort information into a chart.

Listening
You will listen to 4-6 short lectures (about 3-5 minutes each) and 2-3 conversations. You can take notes. After each of these, you will have the folowing types of questions to answer:

Comprehension - You will answer multiple-choice questions about what you heard. These questions will ask about main ideas and major points, speakers' attitudes and purposes in speaking, and relationships between ideas.
Ordering - Based on what you hear, you will put ideas or steps of a process in the correct order.
Organizing information - You will organize information from the lecture or conversation into a chart.

Speaking

Independent tasks - You will speak to answer two questions about personal preferences and choices.
Reading/listening/speaking tasks - One task will be about a situation on a college campus with a short reading passage and a student talking about the situation. You will summarize the student's opinion. The other task includes a textbook passage and excerpt from a class lecture on the same topic. You will answer a question about the information from both sources.
Listening/speaking tasks - You will hear two students discuss a problem, then summarize the problem and give your opinion on the best solution. In the other task, you will listen to part of a classroom lecture and give a summary.

Writing

Reading/listening/writing task - You will read a short textbook passage and then hear a brief lecture that gives a different point of view on the same topic. Then you will write about the main points of the lecture as they compare to the text you read.
Independent writing task - You will write a short essay answering an opinion question.

Grape Trellis - The Beauty Of The Garden

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There would be many wonderful solutions when it comes to the projects of home improvement. If you are thinking that what you should do in order to increase the outdoor beauty of the home then you should get the grapevine on a Grape Trellis. Making your own grape grille is an easy task and on that you can easily grow the grapevine to improve the look and feel of your outdoor space. You can surely enhance the beauty and can give a whole new look to your home in simple and cheap manner.

The grape fence is actually the structure which provides support for the grapevines. As the vines are not very strong so they need a support for themselves and this is what is provided by these fences and grilles. The grape framework can be of many different types and it comes in a wide range of shapes as well as sizes. There can be some trellis for grapes that are decorative and can really enhance and increase the beauty of your garden. Whereas on the other hand there can be many such fences for grapes which are simple yet elegant. These can be the one which are strictly functional and are intended to do a certain specific task.

If you really wish to beautify your garden in a nice and easy manner then you should get the decorative ones. If you are not handy with woodworking or wrought iron then it is recommended that you should go for the decorative one but if you are easily able to handle them then the more functional ones prove to be better than decorative grape trellis. The task of building the grapevine on the functional trellises is quite easy and simple as compared to the other type.

The grapevines become very long and huge with the passage of time so when you are growing them in your garden then you should be careful about the space you have in your outdoor area. If you are not able to get at least an 8' x 8' space then do not think of building them as this is the space which each grapevine would take. The grape grille can easily support the huge and long grapevines and make sure that they grow in some specific direction. These grilles can keep the grapevines in a good shape and give them great support too.

The Help You Need: Learn Affiliate Marketing Software

Currently, I am in the process of learning three new kinds of software, and they are consuming a lot of my time currently. One program submits RSS feeds, articles and forum profiles, one is a Twitter marketing software and the other is a Twitter account creator. Luckily, I do catch on to learning most programs pretty quickly, but for some people learning new programs is a real struggle.

Personally, I find one of the best ways to learn to use new programs is to watch demos on video. This way, I can open my program up, watch the video, pause it if I need to and complete the same steps that are being shown. Although I am a voracious reader, I find the video tutorial method of learning programs far superior to reading most program manuals. Not all of us are programmers, but it seems that most manuals written by programmers assume that you are too.

I'm not a young whiz-kid. I'm 46, and have absolutely no programming skills. My eyes glaze over when I'm in forums and all the programmers are trying to out geek each other. I don't have a clue what they are talking about. I can do the very basics of HTML like create anchor text and image links, but that's about it. Luckily, I don't need to know all the geeky stuff to be an affiliate marketer, and neither do you.

Fortunately, for the rest of us non-programming mortals, Roger at My Affiliate Apprentice makes superb software training videos for the members of the forum. His videos are one of the main reasons that my site-building skills have advanced as far as they have, and how I have picked up using a few deadly programs to boost SEO for my sites and increase my social networking exposure.

Believe it or not, one of the things that makes Roger's videos great is that if he makes a mistake, he leaves it in the video. Why on earth would he do this? He does it because it can help you with troubleshooting if the same thing goes wrong for you. He doesn't put his own ego between you and learning the skills that you need to excel.

And his videos are not limited to just teaching programs. He has great videos for beginners wanting to use WordPress, and covers all facets from installing WordPress-- from installing themes and plugins; creating custom homepages for your sites; using FTP to upload files to your server and much more. I don't think there is more comprehensive training for the beginner to the advanced site builder anywhere else.

While many forums specialize in either training for the noob, or for the uber-geek crowd only, My Affiliate Apprentice strikes a happy medium for both ends of the spectrum. Plenty of good stuff to kick start the noob's business into high gear, and lots of very sophisticated, and not commonly-taught advanced SEO and site building techniques for the seasoned marketer.

The Kytos Project - Excellent Young Adult Fiction From UK Author

Genre: Young Adult Fiction

Title: The Kytos Project

AUTHOR: John von Kesmark

Jimmy, Jack, Bill, and Ashok live in 2070 Britain. They started the day playing cricket on the beach then became too curious about a restricted area at the edge of the beach. Their exploration landed three of them as prisoners of the Rathings – the genetically engineered half-rat half-human breed currently in power. The fourth boy became a guest of the Magars – the half-Magpie half-human breed currently at war with the Rathings. The story that unfolds challenges all the boys, one of them requiring a wheelchair due to spina bifida, to their physical and mental limits as they seek their way home.

John von Kesmark creatively uses genetic engineering as the basis for this suspenseful tale of what could result if a mad scientist has the power to play God. With crisply detailed visual descriptions, the author explores potential results of possible DNA combinations that leave the reader yearning, yet also afraid, to turn the page.

John von Kesmark lives on the River Thames. He has traveled on business throughout the USA, Middle East, Africa and the Far East and has published many non-fiction articles. The Kytos Project is his first published fiction.

This novel is the first in an expected trilogy. It is a great futuristic story that will entertain teenage and adult readers. This is a recommended read for any age interested in the genre, especially those who like to ponder ‘what if’ scenarios of the future. Allbooks Reviews.

How to Get Accurate Psychic Readings With the Help of Spirit Guides

Image : http://www.flickr.com

All throughout the ages, there exist among us, non-physical entities who guide and guard us even without our knowledge. We know them to be our Spirit Guides. Spirit Guides, unlike Guardian Angels, have lived on Earth before. But because of the many incarnations they have been through, they have now evolved, and no longer need to be in human form. Their purpose is not to dictate how we live our lives, but instead, they are here to guide, protect, and direct us to the right path. At the end of the day, it is still up to us to listen to them and explore the possibilities their messages offer us, or go on our usual destructive ways.

However, it is mostly through psychic mediums that these Spirit Guides can better convey to us the help and guidance we need. Since Spirit Guides are highly evolved beings, who have undergone many incarnations here on Earth, and have evolved in its spirituality and purity, only real psychic mediums can actually physically see them, and communicate with them. Hence, it is with the help of these gifted mediums, that the messages they have for people concerned, may be relayed. These messages come in the form of accurate psychic readings that psychic mediums give their clients.

When you are in need of answers on how to live your life, how to find love, whether you are making the right decisions or not, what to do to get the best job, how to handle your finances, where to find happiness, etc., your Spirit Guides can give you certain recommendations that are unique to your situation. Your Spirit Guides know you very well, and they surely hold the key to your bliss. By being given accurate psychic readings through a powerful medium, you will definitely get your answers.

3 Most Common Guides Who Can Help You Live Your Best Life

There are many types of guides who help mediums give accurate psychic readings. Here are some of them:

Gate Keeper Guide - Each one of us has an energy gate. And this guide is the one who stands by the energy gate, monitors, and controls the different Spirit Guides who want to work with you. This guide protects you from being around negative vibrations and energies, and hinders these negative energies from penetrating you. Your Gate Keeper Guide will always be with you, and will always make sure that the other Spirit Guides are in perfect match to your own vibrations.

Indian Guide - Most of us have this Native American Spirit Guide. This guide emotionally, physically and spiritually protects you. An Indian Guide is one of the most common who usually comes during your first reading. This guide also protects you from bad vibrations that may want to enter your energy field. Because of this guide's overly protective nature, an Indian Guide can protect you especially when you feel afraid.

Presenter Guide - This guide is not always present, thus, a Presenter Guide is the most unique of all. This guide works with many different people and is usually present when the loved one who wanted to speak is not strong enough to convey his or her messages. This guide assists souls by increasing their vibrations high enough for a more possible communication between you and your loved one. A Presenter Guide also assists those people who have recently passed.
3 Tips To Get Accurate Psychic Readings

Now that you have knowledge about the Spirit Guides, it would be best to come prepared for a reading, to maximize your time, and to make sure that you are getting accurate psychic readings. Below are some tips you can follow to make your reading experience a great one:

1. Prepare a list of specific questions you want to ask your Spirit Guides. The more specific the questions are, the more accurate psychic readings you will receive.

2. Be ready to receive answers in the form of symbols and images. Answers to your questions are unique to you. Your reader may not be able to understand them but they will have meaning for you. After all, your Spirit Guide knows things about you that no one else does. This is how you know that you are receiving accurate psychic readings.

3. Open your mind and your heart to answers you may not want to hear.

Deep inside all of us, we already have the answers we are seeking for. But most of the time, due to the clutter and noise in our lives, we repress and shut them down. Maybe because the truth hurts, or maybe because we know we are not equipped to handle the consequences of our past actions. But your Spirit Guide is in no position to censor these things. Your Spirit Guide will tell you like it is, whether you need to hear the messages or not. So, be prepared to accept the messages. You will not only get accurate psychic readings, but you, in turn, shall also be healed.

Twenty Days with Julian and Little Bunny by Papa (New York Review Books)

Twenty Days with Julian and Little Bunny by Papa (New York Review Books) Review

This brilliant little book (71 pages of actual text) records twenty days in which Hawthorne was in effect a single parent for his five year old son, Julian, during August 1851. Hawthorne's wife Sophia, called Phoebe in the book, and two daughters (seven year old Una and newborn Rose) go off to visit Sophia's parents. Hawthorne is with Julian for just about every waking moment of Julian's day, running from six or seven AM to seven or seven thirty PM. He records their days in his notebook; and, despite the brief and informal style of these notes (and they are notes and not a detailed chronicle), succeeds in evoking nearly the totality of a child's day. I doubt that any major writer has ever so completely and carefully focused on what a five year old actually does and what his life is like.

Hawthorne is also direct and frank. He gets exasperated (as all parents do) about the constant demands for attention, the nonstop childish chatter and the endless sometimes inane questions but only rarely rebukes Julian. On the whole, Hawthorne is remarkably patient. He is amused by Julian's battles with the monsters that appear in the form of thistles and weeds which Julian routinely and daily slaughters. He is fascinated by Julian's determined and uniformly unsuccessful fishing. He admires Julian's great good nature and his gusto. Hawthorne takes care of the boy's minor illnesses, injuries and accidents. He feeds, dresses, bathes and clothes him daily. He also tries to curl his hair. Some of these actions he admits are badly or clumsily done but they are all clearly done with love.

The book also contains a few insights into other aspects of the normally reserved Hawthorne. He is positively volcanic about his dislike of Massachusetts's Berkshire region and its weather and his contemptuous and angry references to a neighbor and to (of all things) the Shaker sect are painful to read. Also clear, however, is his deep love for his family and for friends such as Melville and his love of life generally. He goes to considerable lengths to rescue a kitten trapped in a cistern and does what he can for the well-being of Bunny, whom he obviously considers a rather dull creature. There are observations on the daily round of country life in 1851 as well, including the contents of meals (little meat but plentiful milk, vegetables and rice), interactions with others, visitors and other matters.

The prose is very direct and clear, a far cry from Hawthorne's complex, allusive and often indirect formal style. This is a record of parenting and of a child's life that is moving and beautiful. There is also a useful if perhaps somewhat overlong introduction by writer Paul Auster.

Twenty Days with Julian and Little Bunny by Papa (New York Review Books) Overview

In July of 1851, Nathaniel Hawthorne's wife and daughters took a trip to visit relatives. How Hawthorne and his five-year-old son Julian managed in their absence is the subject of this tender and funny excerpt from Hawthorne's notebooks. Each day is spent swimming, skipping stones, picking berries, and subduing armies of thistles. There are lots of questions ("He has baited me with more questions, references, and observations, than mortal father ought to be expected to endure"), crises concerning a pet bunny, and only one moment of grown-up companionship - when Mr. Herman Melville stops by to discuss eternity over cigars. This true-life story by a great American writer emerges from obscurity to shine a delightful light upon family life - then and now. An introduction by noted novelist Paul Auster adds to this intimate portrait.

Are Sectional Sofas Fashionable?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With the passage of time, people have become very conscious about their standard of living. Gone are the days when nobody worried about their lifestyle and lived a very simple life. Now they want their houses to be the most trendy and stylish one. On the other hand, the furniture industry has expanded and diversified so much that consumers feel very tempting to buy the newest and most luxurious furniture.

Likewise the greatest revolution made in the sofas in the concept of sectional sofas. Earlier it was very difficult to mobilize the big sofas as they were very heavy and long. Keeping this problem of consumers in mind, sectional couches are made. They are separated sofas which can be carried from one place to another very easily. With their L-shaped figure, they can be settled anywhere and use the maximum place. They can seat a lot of people and even serve for sleeping purpose if anyone wants to sleep on them.

Due to having so many advantages, consumers prefer buying sectional sofas the most. They come in a lot of designs, shapes and colors. They are definitely the most hip thing nowadays. They provide the comfort in your living room which cannot be experienced with any other piece of furniture. Producers keep on making advancements in sectional sofas, so that they match everybody's requirement. First it was though that only large rooms can occupy these sofas but now designs are made which fit in small rooms as well. They can be placed even in offices, hospitals, receptions etc where a lot of people come and go.

These sofas come in microfiber as well as in leather and in a wide variety of colors. With the latest scientific technology they are made to provide everlasting coziness and durability. The colors range from white, red, black or coffee. Microfiber is quite affordable however, the leather sofa is expensive. In the wide range of sectional sofas in the market, you will be easily able to find the one which matches the theme and decor of your living room.

While purchasing this kind of sofa, be very careful and select a sofa after thorough research. Sometimes it happens that the sofas which are looking very beautiful in the showrooms or pictures does not give your living room a contemporary and elegant look, or it occupies all of the space of your room and makes it look congested. That is why choose a sectional sofa according to the exact requirement.

Getting Into Shape With the Help of a Personal Trainer

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There are many people that struggle with having the motivation to make a change in their personal appearance and their health. They want to work out and be healthier but at the same time most of the times they don't really know where to start. Some people actually feel a little insecure when it comes to having to go to the gym and exercise on their own. Maybe they want to do it at home but they become lazy and don't know how to motivate themselves to do it.

There are different things that you have probably read about that help a person to stay in shape, but when it comes down to maintaining great health and a great outward appearance people tend to look for a strategy that will help them to keep weight off in the long run. No one wants a temporary diet or exercise that will only help them for a short period of time. In order for most people to stay healthy and keep extra weight off then they have to be involved in some sort everyday active routine or simply by changing their diet. Exercising about three days a week can improve your overall health and outward appearance if you stay consistent with it. Really you only need to exercise for about an hour three days per week.

Now, going back to the part where the lack of motivation was mentioned. The way to resolve this issue would be simple if you hired a personal trainer to help you to reach your health and weight loss goal. A personal trainer is there to guide you through specific exercise routines that will help you lose weight according to your daily diet and daily activities. Your personal trainer will also be there to encourage you and tell you what things you need to improve and change in your eating habits to help you to reach your goal.

Most personal trainers will give you a daily log for you to fill out. On this log you will include what you eat and drink for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You will also write down any snacks that you eat in between each meal. This is an effective way to keep track of why you might be having trouble losing weight, and to see how you can improve your diet. Stick with whatever diet restrictions your personal trainer puts you on because you will definitely reach your goal if you do.

Book Review for My Worst Best Friend by Dyan Sheldon

My Worst Best Friend is actually the worst novel I've read from front to back in a long, long time. I will recommend this book to any young woman who wants to learn how to act like a spoiled, self-centered diva who lacks having had parental guidance in regards to morals and honesty. I really hope the person I just described doesn't exist. Well, I'm sure this person does exist, but they won't have the brains to read this review in the first place.

Anyways, and moving on...

My Worst Best Friend is about two best friends who demonstrate the grand epitome of opposites attract. Gracie is plain, boyish and smart with common sense and a good head on her shoulders, whereas Savanna is a beautiful, charming, manipulative brat who has already mastered the art of flirting at the age of sixteen and gets her way one-hundred percent of the time.

When Savanna meets and begins dating a college boy, Gracie proves her loyalty as a best friend by lying constantly for Savanna and ditching the more important people in her life for her worthless, idiot friend. As we near the novel's end, we get a glimpse of how lying and supporting a terrible cause can really make you feel low. Hurray for Gracie as she grows balls and stands up for what's right when she puts Savanna in her place and chases down the person who connects with her the best, an odd yet intelligent loyal boy named Cooper.

The novel is mainly maddening because we are forced to withstand Savanna's awful, stupid, unintelligble teenage lingo. Please don't tell me this is really what teenagers talk like now:

Savanna: "But I had this, like, really really stressful day. And I mean really really filled with stress. The stress was packed in there like salmons in a can."

REALLY? Innocently mistaking salmon for sardines isn't even cute or funny. Not coming from this girl.

Chapter One had me praying Savanna would walk in front of a school bus, but knowing it isn't going to happen makes this book truly dreadful. What ever happened to those teenagers of yesteryear that were sophisticated, witty, classy, and admirable? My favorite characters were always those written by L.J. Smith in the Secret Circle and Vampire Diaries series. Not to mention those mature, grown-up characters also featured in Christopher Pike and R.L. Stine YA novels. I wanted to be those girls SO BAD! And not because they were popular or beautiful, but because they were so cool, calm and collected no matter what the circumstance.

When Savanna's character isn't present or being mentioned, My Worst Best Friend is awesome and even enjoyable. Sadly, these moments are few and far between. I love the exchanges between Gracie and Cooper regarding their ongoing classic movie quote game. Now THIS is more like it in the way of intelligence and sophistication between two teenage characters.

I wouldn't recommend My Worst Best Friend to any teenager or young adult. The lesson and message just isn't strong or powerful enough. The novel is more annoying than anything.

I know Dyan Sheldon is extremely successful, and has really excelled as a children's and young adult author of numerous titles; including Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, which was also made into a movie. Although she is very popular and her work is largely appraised, I don't think as a reader you should waste your time on My Worst Best Friend.

Other recent titles by Dyan Sheldon include Drusilla and Her Brothers (2009), The Difficult Job of Keeping Time (2008), and Confessions of a Teenage Hollywood Star (2007).
