Pressure is a Privilege - New Book Release by Billie Jean King

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Lessons I've learned from Life and the Battle of the Sexes is a remarkable book in as much as Billie Jean King reveals never before discussed, behind the scenes thoughts, events, preparations and the enormous pressures she endured to represent her gender in the legendary 1973 Battle of the Sexes against Bobby Riggs that changed the world.

Barack Obama's debate with John McCain in September of 2008 was a top world TV event registering a whopping 40 million viewers. The Riggs-King Battle of the Sexes, 35 years ago drew over 50 million and helped launch the gender-equal process around the globe.

While the book is only a 190 page read, King shares with the reader her dreams, actions and now her legacy. This is a very personal diary of one of the most important women of our time. It is really life on our planet as we know it to date and a good look into the future regarding what we need to strive for now.

Here is just a little girl from Long Beach, California whose father was a fireman and all she wanted to do was play softball with the boys. But along the way she found a magic wand in a tennis racquet.

In 1976, Time Magazine voted her "Woman of the Year".

In 1990, Life Magazine voted her one of the Top 100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century.

She changed college scholarship opportunities for women (TitleIX)

She got equal prize money for women in all the Grand Slams events.

Along the way she merely won six Wimbledon singles titles, four U.S. Open singles titles, and was ranked number one in the world for five years.

In 2007, the site of the U.S.OpenTennis Championship in Flushing Meadows, New York was officially renamed "Billie Jean King National Tennis Center."

And with this book it is obvious that she's still going strong!

Review - The Purloined Boy

The Purloined Boy, Mortimus Clay, 2009, ISBN 9780982159804

This is the tale of Trevor, a young boy who becomes one of those children who end up on milk cartons under the word Missing.

Trevor is living in a dark and dreary town called Superbia, along with many other children. Think of an orphanage from Victorian England. They are not allowed to say words like "parents" or "home." If they do, the bogeymen who run Superbia (and who kidnapped the children from their beds), will send them away for behavior modification, or send them to the Pantry, to be fattened up and eaten by the bogeymen. Becoming a meal for the bogeymen is the eventual fate of all the children.

After a very vivid dream about his parents, Trevor asks about going home, and is sent away for behavior modification. Around this time, he meets Maggie, a fellow orphan who also has memories of life before Superbia. She tells Trevor that she is part of a secret society whose aim is to help all the children who want to return home to actually do it. He also meets Epictetus, a one-eyed slave who is a leader in the "underground," and Zephyr, a very unique talking mouse. Trevor also learns about Trothward, a very nice place outside Superbia. He also learns about the long-term war going on between the Guild, who runs Trothward, and Lucian, the leader of the bogeymen. This leads Trevor to one adventure, and narrow escape, after another, while he is traversing many dank and dreary passageways beneath Superbia.

This is a young adult book that was made to be read aloud to older children, say between 10-13 years old. It may be a little too much for younger children. There are a number of dark and spooky bits in this story, and, being first in a series, there is not a "happily ever after" ending. The author does an excellent job with this tale from beginning to end, and it is very much worth the time.

Benefits of the Help Desk System

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Modern technology is on the threshold to improve management processes in small business enterprises. The key areas are customer service & support management. Customer support is an indispensable part of any business proposition. Customer satisfaction in modern day world is directly proportionate to a company's bottom line and growth prospects. A company with good product and excellent customer handling always emerges as the winner. Thanks to the widely available customer support software making it possible for small enterprises to achieve the desired goals.

Unearthing the gaps:

Customer support is a widely emphasized service that most business concerns preach and practice. A comprehensive support service to control and manage customer queries towards providing prompt solutions is what business enterprises look for. The progressive business trends have a clearly defined objective to maximize the productivity and sales.

However, there are some bottlenecks involved in the procedure. Due to the disorganized structure in receiving queries, quite often the queries fail to reach the correct person who can actually solve the issue. The customer queries are very diverse thereby making it difficult for the email service to prioritize the queries according to the urgency. There is no proper arrangement wherein the support executives can view the assigned queries. There is no channel/room for discussions among the persons handling the queries due to restricted access settings. The entire process of resolving issues becomes tedious. The email service is not considered reliable and prompt by many a customers. As a result, the number of authentic and regular customer queries goes down and the email functionality falls short of its purpose.

Unfolding the Remedy:

With an array of help desk systems offering enhanced customer support facilities, small business enterprises can choose a system that has features compatible with their organizational setting. Apart from the basic requirement of installing a web based system with the essential plugins, the core functionality should be focused on attaining optimum customer satisfaction. Categorization of queries sent by customers helps in proper delegation and coordination of tasks among support staff. Customer support is never complete without the scope for knowledge gaining & knowledge sharing in the organization. The support system that provides an updated database on related issues helps solve similar queries in lesser time. A reliable help desk system will surely gain the goodwill of many a customers. An effective support system will broaden the scope of growth and profitability for small business concerns.

How To Get Your New Book Published Quickly

Did you just finish writing a book that you would like to see published? If so, you may be looking for some guidance, especially if you are a new, unpublished author. Below a list of helpful tips on how to get a book published.

Next, it is important to be prepared for rejections. This is different from the above mentioned tip of not making any assumptions; like that your book will automatically fail or be denied by all publishers. It is more than possible to get a book published, but it often takes time and trial and error, especially for new authors. This means that you should get use to the fact that rejection is common. Don't expect it, but don't feel heartbroken or completely give up if and when a rejection letter arrives in the mail.

Another helpful tip involves not assuming that you need to have a literary agent, especially right away. Yes, literary agents do improve most writers' chances of getting published through a major publisher, but there is no written rule stating that you do need to use a literary agent. Many publishers still accept unsolicited book manuscripts. As an important note, should you decide to use a literary agent, be sure to use your best judgment? Examine fees, get feedback from past and current clients, and so forth.

In keeping with hiring a professional literary agent, if you are unsure about using the services of one, try your hand at not doing so first. The Writer's Market book, other similar guides, and research online can tell you what publishers accept books from authors without agents.

As it was previously stated, the Writer's Market books, other similar printed resources, and the internet can help you examine publishers. Be sure to read all information that is provided to you. This will prevent you from making many common mistakes. For example, some publishers only allow you to submit one book manuscript to them at a time or submitting your manuscript to multiple publishers at the same time may be advised against.

In keeping with what is expected of you and your documents, examine any formatting guidelines that may be imposed. There is nothing worse that submitting a manuscript that does not follow clear cut directions. Be sure to include a cover letter, as well as self-addressed stamped return envelope, unless a publisher outright states that one is not required. Also, never send your original documents. Even if your manuscript is saved on your computer, be sure to always keep backups, in both printed and disc formats.

The above mentioned tips are just a few of the many things that you will want to keep in mind when looking to get your book published. As a reminder, it is not always easy to get a book published, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't follow your dream. If you have a book written, go ahead and start submitting it to publishers. You have nothing to lose by doing so.

The 10 Rules For Being Human.

'The 10 Rules For Being Human' From The Book 'If Life Is A Game, These Are The Rules.' By Cherie Carter-Scott Created By Lo (Enigmaress). Rule One - You will receive a body. Whether you love it or hate it, it's yours for life, so accept it. What counts is what's inside. Rule Two - You will be presented with lessons. Life is a constant learning experience, which every day provides opportunities for you to learn more. These lessons specific to you, and learning them 'is the key to discovering and fulfilling the meaning and relevance of your own life'. Rule Three - There are no mistakes, only lessons. Your development towards wisdom is a process of experimentation, trial and error, so it's inevitable things will not always go to plan or turn out how you'd want. Compassion is the remedy for harsh judgement - of ourselves and others. Forgiveness is not only divine - it's also 'the act of erasing an emotional debt'. Behaving ethically, with integrity, and with humour - especially the ability to laugh at yourself and your own mishaps - are central to the perspective that 'mistakes' are simply lessons we must learn. Rule Four - The lesson is repeated until learned. Lessons repeat until learned. What manifest as problems and challenges, irritations and frustrations are more lessons - they will repeat until you see them as such and learn from them. Your own awareness and your ability to change are requisites of executing this rule. Also fundamental is the acceptance that you are ...

New York: The Novel Overview

Winner of the David J. Langum, Sr., Prize in American Historical Fiction

Named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post and “Required Reading” by the New York Post

Edward Rutherfurd celebrates America’s greatest city in a rich, engrossing saga, weaving together tales of families rich and poor, native-born and immigrant—a cast of fictional and true characters whose fates rise and fall and rise again with the city’s fortunes. From this intimate perspective we see New York’s humble beginnings as a tiny Indian fishing village, the arrival of Dutch and British merchants, the Revolutionary War, the emergence of the city as a great trading and financial center, the convulsions of the Civil War, the excesses of the Gilded Age, the explosion of immigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the trials of World War II, the near demise of New York in the 1970s and its roaring rebirth in the 1990s, and the attack on the World Trade Center. A stirring mix of battle, romance, family struggles, and personal triumphs, New York: The Novel gloriously captures the search for freedom and opportunity at the heart of our nation’s history.

New York: The Novel Specifications

Edward Rutherfurd on New York

Strangely, I suspect it was Viking ancestors who drew me to New York.

For centuries my father's family lived on Britain's biggest tidal river, the Severn, on which there was a huge trade with the interior, and through the port of Bristol with America. In the nineteenth century they were in shipping from the Baltic to the Black Sea, and on the great rivers of Europe--the Rhine, the Danube, even the Russian River Dnieper. I myself was born beside a river--the Avon in Sarum. So when I first encountered New York's great harbor and the Hudson River as a teenager, and came to understand their historic canal and railroad links to the vast spaces of the Midwest, I felt both the thrill of a new adventure, and a deep sense of homecoming.

I first considered writing New York in 1991. I'd been in the city for a decade, was married to an American wife and sending my children to New York schools. I was even on the board of a coop building. But I wasn't sure how to organize such complex material, and for many years I put the project aside.

It was kind encouragement and old-fashioned editing from William Thomas at Doubleday that finally persuaded me to try again. And soon I was hooked.

New York's gift to the storyteller is magnificent: Indian and Dutch beginnings; larger-than-life historical characters like Lord Cornbury, the transvestite British Governor, the socialite Mrs. Astor, and the titanic J.P. Morgan; huge events from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War--when New York threatened to secede from the Union--to the Crash of '29 and the tragedy of 9/11. But it's the ordinary people I discover in my research--African slaves, Irish laborers, society ladies and sweatshop workers--whose lives move me most, and who provide so many of my plots and characters.

My own personal experiences also helped. I descend from both Philadelphia Quakers and Carolina colonists whose families were separated by the Revolutionary War. That helped give me insight into the agony of Patriots who, until the British government denied their claims, had always, like Ben Franklin himself, thought of themselves as free-born Englishmen. One of my closest friends since university is an Italian immigrant. Understanding the poverty and humiliations of her childhood helped me create the book's Caruso family who came through Ellis Island and lived in Little Italy.

I also love discovering how things work. It was as fascinating to study the history of Wall Street banking--and how financial crises always repeat themselves!--as it was to learn how the Empire State Building was constructed.

But above all, what I love about New York is that people have always come there in search of freedom, and usually found it. I was lucky to be born beside Sarum's Avon. But I'd like my New York children to scatter my ashes in the Hudson. --Edward Rutherfurd

New Book Offers Exceptional Advice on Finance and Investing

This book's title "Wealth Is a Choice: How to Choose Wisely" says it all. Wealth is a choice. No one gets rich without making the decision to do so, whether it is deciding to buy a lottery ticket or pragmatically planning for retirement. The first thing people must do is make conscious decisions that they will have wealth and then set goals to achieve that wealth. Of course, the goals must be realistic, which rules out the lottery. In "Wealth Is a Choice" James Studinger provides valuable advice for setting realistic goals based on his own experiences and his many years of helping his clients increase their wealth.

Throughout "Wealth Is a Choice," Studinger relates personal experiences-his childhood in Manistique, Michigan, his working for a firm that helped prison employees with managing their money in the Marquette Branch Prison, various firms he has worked for in Michigan, and examples of the clients he has helped to grow their wealth, as well as examples of clients who did not grow wealth and what held them back. He also tells his own story of personally learning how to handle his money so he was not in debt. He began writing "Wealth Is a Choice" because he wanted to leave his sons a money road map should anything happen to him. That idea grew into one of the best books on money management I have ever read.

"Wealth Is a Choice" stands out for many reasons. First of all, a lot I know about money I learned from Suze Orman. Her books and television show are fantastic about money management, but Orman and many others focus primarily on how to get out of debt, and how to save money by spending less. Studinger talks about debt briefly, but he notes that many good books already exist on the subject. His purpose is instead to help us learn how to grow our money, which is what I've most wanted to learn. I'm apparently one of the fortunate few in America not in debt who has always been good at saving money. My need has been trying to figure out what to do with the money I save-how to invest it, what to invest it in, how to know whether an investment will be good or bad.

I have read books about mutual funds and stocks and how to determine which ones are likely to grow. Most of it I quickly forget. What was missing from the equation, and Studinger is the only author I know who has made this clear, is that the ultimate goal is to figure out how much you need to retire, and then to track your progress regularly toward that goal.

One point Studinger covers extensively, which cannot be underestimated, is the importance of finding a reliable advisor. He warns us that many advisors try to sell clients products based on how much commission they will receive rather than what is best for the client. He tells us to ask advisors upfront what the benefit is to them, while reminding us just because one investment will pay off for the advisor more than another, it doesn't mean we shouldn't choose the investment that will help the advisor more, we just also should choose what makes most sense for our investment needs. After all, advisors deserve to make a good living off their work provided they are giving their clients good advice. Studinger tells us to ask three basic questions of advisors before we make an investment: What is the rate of return? What is the risk? What is the cost?

Beyond finding a good advisor, Studinger suggests we find a good software program that allows us to track our investments. I have tried to track my investments by paper statements, making spreadsheets etc., but it is tedious and I never keep up with it. A software program sounds like the way to go. Studinger's own wealth management firm, JPStudinger Group, provides a wealth management solution tool that is web-based so clients can track their investments. A video of this tool can be viewed at http://www.jpstudinger.com.

The only slight flaw I see in this book are the examples of wealthy clients Studinger uses. The majority of them have significant incomes ranging from $80,000 annually and upward. Most Americans do not have such incomes, so they might find such numbers intimidating. Unfortunately, it is people with such high incomes who will most likely be reading this book. However, the person who makes $30,000 a year will find the advice given just as useful. Don't let the numbers intimidate you. A person's current income does not have to determine whether someone has the choice to become wealthy. As Studinger points out, it's about making good choices with the money you have that will make the difference.

"Wealth Is a Choice" is an easy to understand book. Unlike with many investment books, I never once felt lost or confused. Studinger writes in a straightforward style, and his honest advice leaves me with no doubt that he has the reader's best interests at heart. He has great cartoons throughout the book to illustrate his discussion, and he uses effective analogies, including football offense and defense and archery anchor points to get his points across. I think male readers will especially be able to relate to his examples and find the advice practical.

Lots of people read about money or tell themselves someday they will get their finances together. This book will inspire people to do so. Many readers, after completing this book, will realize that wealth is a choice and be inspired to make that choice for themselves. I know "Wealth Is a Choice" has encouraged me to review my financial goals and plan better for retirement.

Mockingjay Book Review (Hunger Games Series)

Mockingjay is the third and final installment of the Hunger Games trilogy, following Hunger Games and Catching Fire. If you haven't read these books, I would highly recommend them. They aren't uplifting, humorous, or light but a good read still.

At the beginning of Mockingjay, Katniss is in the hands of the rebels in District 13 while Peeta is in the hands of the Capital and President Snow. The rebels want Katniss to be their symbol of hope, their "leader" in a propaganda sort of way. When people see her, they will want to fight. Wherever Katniss goes, a TV crew is right along her side, and they are able to infiltrate the Capital's system and show her on TV around the different districts & capital, hoping to stir up the rebellion. What I like about Katniss's character is she isn't a good actress - but what she does is because of her own decisions, and instincts. She is a fighter, she feels sorrow & pain, and she feels confusion. The Capital brings Peeta on the TV, begging Katniss & the rebels not to start a war - that too many people will be killed and no one will be left. He begs her to stop, but Katniss does what she feels is right. War is inevitable - the Districts are tired of being under the control of the Capital, but is the new rebellion government what they need?

The story itself is rather dark and dreary - it is a war book. People die, you get frustrated with the rebels, you are enlightened about other Hunger Game victims, and confused by what is right. Katniss isn't the perfect character, but what human is? Do things get resolved in this book? Yes. Is it a happily-ever-after book? No. How could it be? Katniss has experienced having to kill people, having her friends killed, the Capital poisoning the minds of her friends, toying with her mind, the loss of her home, etc? What kind of person would you be after experiencing all that?

This series is depressing, but engaging. I couldn't put down any of the books, and am relieved that the series is finished. No more waiting!

Whether you are just learning to use spreadsheets for the first time or you are an old hand at Excel, everyone eventually runs into a problem. It might be an error on the sheet or you might be trying to find a way to accomplish a task, but eventually you will need help.

The online help feature in Excel is a comprehensive resource for new and experienced users alike but it has its limits. When using Excel, Microsoft training with certified instructors gives you access to support that isn't possible with an online resource.

When You Don't Even Know What Question to Ask

Have you ever had problem with the thing by the other thing? You know, that command with the menu and it generates those numbers? It's got a picture that looks kind of like, well not a banana exactly but sort of a yellow blobby shape.

Try typing that into Help and see what you find.

Especially if you are a new user you often don't have the vocabulary even to know how to ask the question. You might get the concepts but can't put them into concrete terms understandable by the Help function in Excel.

Microsoft training provides you with the vocabulary and the basic concepts you might be missing, even if you have been using a feature for years. Not only can this add to your understanding of a function it can give you the tools to ask the right questions in Excel.

An instructor can also help with vague questions. You may not know what the thing by the other thing is called, but with a little information an experienced user can figure out what you are talking about and point you in the right direction.

Discover New Features You Never Imagined

Once a user figures out how to do something, it is common to stop exploring the features of Excel. Microsoft training exposes you to features of the application you might not even know existed.

A surprising number of people still use Excel as nothing more than a bookkeeping spreadsheet, happy with simple equations and maybe an occasional function. They may not realize that Excel's advanced analysis and database functions make it the right tool for a huge array of functions not just simple arithmetic.

Support after the Course

When you take a course you not only learn new information but you make important contacts that will help you use the application later. The training provider may offer help forums that allows you to get help from certified instructors long after the course is complete.

Another great resource is the other students. You are all at a similar experience level and are likely to have questions and experiences that will be helpful to the others. Stay in contact with your fellow students and compare notes as you all learn to use Excel better. That way when you figure out the thing by the other thing, you can tell them all about it.

Verde Island Passage - Scuba Diving at the Center of Biodiversity

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Located between Luzon and Mindoro in the Philippines, Verde Island is home to an exquisite marine life sanctuary called the Verde Island Passage. In recent times, the island has been frequented by an increasing number of scuba divers due to the abundance of marine life in its waters. Given the low cost diving amenities offered by local dive operators - at rates that would compete with low key diving destinations; access to first-rate underwater attractions is now made even more doable and surprisingly affordable. Here's a rundown of what's cooking at the Verde Island Passage that would surely delight both the discriminating scuba diver and of course those running on a tight budget.

Abundant Marine Resources. With hundreds of coral species and more than half of the world's shore fish species inhabiting its waters, Verde Island Passage is now regarded as the "center of center" of biodiversity in the world. The island's teeming marine life has time and again attracted an increasing number of scuba divers from across the globe. Consequently, this development has enticed locals to shift livelihoods from commercial fishing to aquarium fishing; but then again, the Philippine government has been quick to respond with pertinent conservation measures to protect this marine life sanctuary from degradation.

Availability of Amenities. Verde Island is located not too far from Puerto Gallera; a municipality that houses some of the best resorts in the Philippines. In addition to that, diving tour rates are superbly cheap which could go as low as half the package rates being offered for a diving vacation in Palau. Many dive operators even bundle hotel accommodations with the scuba diving packages, adding more value to already rock bottom rates.

All-around Affordable Rates. Complementing the low cost scuba diving amenities in Verde Island and nearby towns are the affordable dine, travel and other scuba diving services offered by local establishments so that scuba divers need not burn a hole in their pockets when sampling the island's many underwater and off shore attractions.

Verde Island Passage is home to one of the greatest underwater sceneries in Southeast Asia, so we recommend the wear of high performance scuba gear such as the Scuba Max Frameless III Mask. This innovative piece of scuba equipment sports a frameless tri-view design. Outfitted with 3 lenses, this feature allows for an unobstructed view of the underwaters; perfect for the amazing seascape that rightfully describes the Verde Island Passage. Another great addition to your scuba gear is a pair of IST Talaria Split Fins [http://www.scubasuppliers.com/site/1408308/product/F-2], which is manufactured with a patented split fin technology which implies reduced kicking effort and heightened scuba diving fun on your part.

Will the New E-Book Readers Replace Paper and Ink Media?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

E-book readers (or digital readers as they are also called) are all the rage today. It seems that every time we turn around another major player is releasing, or planning on releasing a new electronic reading device. At the present time Amazon's Kindle reader is the top choice among consumers. Following close behind is the great Sony Readers that are flying off the shelves as quickly as they are being produced.

Today, the average price of the e-book readers on the market is about $300. The average price had been closer to $400 until recently when Amazon dropped the Kindle price down some.
Many consumers, unfamiliar with e-book readers, refuse to spend that much money on a device that many have never even held before, let alone use. It is expected however, that sometime in 2010, the prices may drop again due to many more electronics companies promising to release new digital readers before year's end.

Electronics company Acer announced in January at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas that it plans on releasing a family of readers before the end of this year. While Acer is not one of the world's favorite electronics manufacturers compared to say, Sony or Samsung, it does deserve recognition for making the mini laptop wildly popular. Its micro laptops did indeed sell like lemonade on a hot summer day and they are still doing well today. The interesting aspect of the Acer announcement is the fact that these devices will most certainly be priced well below that of the current average price, which will undoubtedly drive down the costs of all of the readers being sold-which is great news for the consumer!

Talk to anyone who owns a Kindle reader (or any brand name e-book reader for that matter) and they will surely sing the praises of reading electronically. The portability factor and the fact that you can load an entire personal library onto one, small and thin device is pretty impressive. They will also surely tell you that e-book readers are eco-friendly as no trees must be cut down in the making of the devices.

The next question on the minds of many is this: Will e-book readers replace books, newspapers and magazines in the very near future? They are fun to use, are extremely practical and allow you to take all of your books with you, no matter where you go. Already a few colleges in the United States are testing e-book readers in their classrooms as a possible replacement for costly textbooks. Are we willing to give up the joys of opening a new book, smelling the fresh scent of ink on paper for an electronic gadget? Who knows? Maybe and maybe not. Only time will tell and it most certainly will make for some interesting developments.

How to Keep Cats Out of Yard - The Top 10 Recipes For Homemade Cat Repllent

Are the neighborhood cats constantly using your garden or favorite rose bushes as a toilet? Many people have trouble with the neighbor's cats digging up their plants, as well as fighting (or other things) on their patios at night.

Even if you have cats, or are just a cat-lover, there may are a lot of stray cats in your neighborhood. This could be a problem if a stray tom cat has been sneaking into your yard and spraying. After all of this; you end up spending weeks cleaning up after someone else's mess. Wouldn't it be good if you could keep cats out of your yard?

Some common remedies can be poisonous to cats or just downright mean and should be avoided. These include traps and mothballs; which can cause liver damage to both the cats and your family.

Here are some recipes for homemade cat repellent to help keep your flower in great shape.

1. Mix together Vinegar, liquid hand soap and water, in equal parts.  Spray it liberally on your lawn.

2. Cats seem to run from Rosemary Essential Oil. Mix a little of rosemary with water and spray it onto areas that are problematic.

3. Another cat repellent that they seem to hate is a little crushed garlic, cayenne pepper, sugar, water, lemon and cinnamon.

4. Plant a bush called Coleus Canina, also known as Scardy Cat. It grows in almost any kind of soil, has grey/green foliage with little blue flowers and when crushed releases a horrible odor. Most cats seem to not be able to stand this plant at all.

5. Try mixing 5 tablespoons each of flour, powdered mustard, cayenne pepper and chili powder with 2 quarts of warm water. Mix these together and spray the perimeter of your yard or garden.

6. You could also try mixing together 20 drops of lemon oil, 10 drops capsicum (liquid cayenne pepper), 20 drops of eucalyptus oil and 1 quart of water. Mix and shake well.  Spray on furniture, carpet, upholstery and around your plants.

7. Add the juice from the greenest orange you can find to a little warm water and spray the areas you want to cats out of.

8. Place citrus rinds and used coffee grounds in your flower beds or garden to keep most critters out.

9. Add some herbs to your beds. Add to your garden some citronella, rue, lavender, rosemary or garlic and chives. These are attractive plants but are a natural cat repellent.

10. Rub a sliced onion around fence posts or deck chairs and spread the slices around your garden areas.

What You Don't Know, Can Hurt You

As an Objectivist, it is a given that I believe in a Reality that is separate from my own perceptions and understanding of it. This is the very basis of what it is to be an Objectivist. What does this imply exactly? It means that the fact that I am unaware of an action taken for or against me, has no bearing on the fact that it did take place, and it did affect me. It means that if someone steals from me, with me unaware of the theft, that I am no less harmed by my ignorance. In fact it could be argued that I am in fact harmed even further by my ignorance, for because of my ignorance I cannot take any action to rectify the theft and won't be motivated to take measures to see that it doesn't occur again in the future. By this reasoning, ignorance is obviously causing me harm, even though I don't know it. That is the insidious nature of the thing. Your ignorant even of your own ignorance.

Here is a scene from a movie that sometimes comes to mind when I am pondering these things:

"Morpheus :It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth Neo : What truth? Morpheus: That you are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else you were born into bondage. Into a prison that you cannot taste or see or touch. A prison for your mind."

Pretty scary thought huh? Sadly, and more than horrifying is that Truth is scarier than fiction. That is a brief excerpt from the movie 'The Matrix'. While I won't delve to deeply into the political aspects of the movie, or any of the other concepts it brings up, I did want to share this concept. The concept of something so integral to our existence we no longer have the capacity to truly recognize it for what it is. Something we were born into, something we have learned to take for granted, but ultimately something that was designed and currently used to enslave us. Just because we do not recognize our own slavery, our literal serfdom, just because the mechanism for theft is so subtle, does not mean it doesn't occur, that it isn't occurring even as you read this. What is the prime tool of our serfdom? Well many of you may already be familiar with it. It is an oft used term, but seldom understood; inflation.

Well what is inflation? Many others have attempted to answer this question. Economics professors, bankers, and politicians alike. They say it is the increase of the money supply. They say it is necessary for economic welfare, they say a lot of things about it, but what they never tell you, is the truth. The truth about inflation can be summed up in one word: THEFT. Inflation = Theft. That's it. That's all it is. All their posturing, all their obfuscation, all their theories, all their lies, are designed to hide this one fact. Inflation is Theft. And it isn't just any simple theft. It isn't a petty crime, and it doesn't just affect some people. It affects everyone currently holding dollars as money. That's pretty much everyone. This is where ignorance really sucks, because even though you may have been ignorant of the theft, does not mean you haven't been robbed.

The first thing most people want to ask when the discover they have been robbed is: How Much? Well, the damage is pretty severe. It's very severe in fact. Lets break down some of the numbers to give you an idea of how severe it is. From January of 1914 to January 2009 the total inflation rate is 2,011.43%. That's right, over Two thousand percent since the creation of the federal reserve cartel. So how much loss of value does that mean for each dollar? If something cost a single dollar in January of 1914, that same thing would cost you 21.12$ today. So what, you ask? What does it matter? Well in that intervening time the value of our money was de-valued. But where did that value go? Did it just evaporate into the atmosphere? Did it just disappear? No, it did not. Someone took that value, by increments, and by design. Someone is still taking that value. For that is the purpose of inflation. It is a hidden tax.

Production is wealth. This is true on the face of it. The country that produces more goods to be sold has more wealth. That is why America became wealthy in the first place. Wealth is not defined by how many dollars you have in your bank account. Wealth is how much of this 'stuff', the goods and products and planes trains and automobiles etc, that you possess. Since we know production is wealth, then it should be understood that if a countries production increases then so to should the wealth of its citizens. After all they were the producers of that wealth, should they not get the bounty of their production? Shouldn't the wealth of a nation directly correspond to how much it produces? Shouldn't those figures mirror each other almost exactly? That sad fact is that they do not. When we factor in that production in this country has improved year after year for nearly the last century, (despite terrible domestic and foreign policy and despite the continuous and over-burdensome taxation).

This increase in production is due to a number of factors, like improved technology, improved business practices, and in no small part because of individual innovators constantly striving to find a way to make the same things cheaper. This trend to find the most cost effective way to create goods and services, means that overall production increases. With an increase in production we should see and increase in total wealth right? Wrong! But why? Where has this increase in production and wealth gone? In actual value terms, we have not received the bounty of our increased production. The true value of that increased production has been taken from us, and the mechanism by which it is stolen is inflation. How much? The disparity isn't small. In the quarter century between 1980 and 2005, business productivity increased by 71%. Over the same quarter century, median weekly earnings of full-time workers rose from $613 to $705, a gain of only 14% (figures in 2005 dollars). This is to show you that even though our productivity rises, the ones doing the production do not see the benefit from this increase of production.

Just recently those who thought they were wealthy because they had some very valuable stocks, just found out when the stock market plummeted that wealth and money although closely related, are not the same thing. Wealth is not money. Just because you received a raise at your job does not necessarily mean you increased your wealth. Wages always trail behind inflation, that means if you were paid 10 dollars an hour in 2006, and you didn't receive a raise equaling at least .68 cents an hour or greater by 2009, you didn't even keep up with inflation. You are now less wealthy. Put another way, if you had an income of 50,000 a year during 2006, and didn't increase your income to 53,395$ by 2009, then once again you fell behind. If you actually took a pay cut as many are doing now, then that is on top of the lost value from inflation. That is just in three years. And that is just for one household. When you realize the literal mountains of money being stolen from from all of us each and every year, you have to begin to wonder why they even have income tax. The truth is, they could finance the entire government from inflation alone, and the income tax is small potatoes to them.

What does all this loss of value really mean for you. It means you and your family have to work that much harder, and that much longer every year, year after year, just to keep up with it. It means your on a treadmill. Your one of those rats in its wheel running for all your worth and the mad political scientists and money magicians sit back and laugh at you while they take all that effort and turn it into gold for themselves.

It terms of actual purchasing power, the average American wage is decreasing, not increasing. This is no joke, this is no lie. In '99 a report published by The Economic Policy Institute showed that the average American worked six weeks more per year than when the study began in '89. In that same year the average personal savings rate became negative. This means that despite working longer hours, we were actually going into debt to maintain our standard of living. Debt is voluntary servitude. We are becoming more enslaved by the day, and we are the ones putting on the shackles.

Now that we have at least some understanding of the tools used to enslave us, what is the Primary Cause? How do things like this happen? Why does a free people give up its freedom, seemingly without even a single protest. How could such a ruse be carried on for the better part of a century without nary a grumble from the masses. Simply put, it is because they are ignorant. Ignorance is your nemesis, for if you are ignorant of your serfdom, what need is there to complain. If your ignorant of the theft, why would you cry when it is taken. It is the most perfect serfdom in the history of the world. For the first time our rulers and elitist's can extort from you riches beyond count or measure and leave you barely enough to subsist upon, and their is no general outcry, there is no general revolt or rebellion. These things do not happen by accident, they happen because a bunch of very smart, very motivated and very evil people came together and concocted a plan that would make them beyond rich, and beyond powerful and they would do it with your governments help. The politicians would be bought and paid for with the bribe of being able to appropriate endless amounts of money from the masses for all the pet projects in the world, and the bankers would help them do it. Its the greatest fleecing and greatest crime in history, and nobody even talks about it. How does this happen? It happens because people refuse to become educated, they refuse to learn about money and banking and how the money magicians work their magic, in effect they refuse to learn about the prison they were born into. Which brings me back to the topic of this article: They refuse to remedy their own ignorance, and What you don't know, Can hurt you.

There is a quote that goes something like this "Those not interested in politics, will be forever ruled by those who are." Well I am going to change that to this, "Those not interested in banking, will be forever ruled by those who are." The federal Reserve act was created in 1913. Most people alive back then are dead and gone. Most of us were born into this mess, into this perfect mouse trap. But most of us just accept it as 'the way things are'. We take it for granted that banks can lend out 9 dollars for every actual dollar they have, in essence creating that 9 dollars out of thin air (inflation). We take it for granted that this is okay, and we never stop to question whether it is moral. Well I for one will continue to question them and their perfect setup, for I firmly believe that just because a thing is, doesn't mean it should be.

The Morality Of Modern Borrowing And Understanding The Debt Settlement Program

Regardless of the savings available, we do not wish to give the impression that gaining admittance to a debt settlement program comes without any consequences for the borrower. If you have already run up your unsecured debt balances to such an extent as normal compensation's all but a fantasy, you owe it to yourself and your family to unearth every last path toward satisfaction of the various alternatives toward bankruptcy: or the slow road toward serfdom virtually guaranteed through funding naught but the minimum monthly payments on billing statements.

We're sure, had you to do everything over again, you would never ever allowed such financial problems to come to pass. Hindsight's always twenty twenty, as they say, and, should you borrow in haste, you'll repay in leisure. Nothing will ever take the place of an initial round of budgetary discipline, but, once the damage has already been done, analyzing the potential benefits of some demonstrably successful form of debt relief such as settlement negotiation must be the next step for any head of household worried about the impact of unsecured loan balances upon domestic finances.

There's no point crying over spoiled credit ratings, and beating yourself up over past spending binges won't do a thing to halt the march of compound interest. Life within the twenty first century United States of America all but pushes consumer debt upon the unwary citizen, and, for some purposes (student loans for practical degrees, say, or well thought out home mortgages on fixed rates with twenty percent down payments) borrowing might be the key to a prosperous future.

Strangely enough, though, the powers that be - which seem to have little to do with the wishes of the debt addled populace, believe it or not - have made it harder and harder to get out from under the yoke of unsecured lines of credit just as they've become that much easier to assume. With perfect timing that almost precisely anticipated the coming recession, our national legislative body (acting upon advice from the long standing desires of the credit card companies to curtail easy protection from debt reclamation) enacted successive stumbling blocks toward Chapter 7 bankruptcy declaration that terrifically shrunk the number of Americans that could potentially gain access, and all of this occurred just as the rising unemployment tolls multiplied the demand.

To a degree, even as the Congressional siege upon the United States Bankruptcy Code helped to popularize the debt settlement program among all classes and regions, the limitations placed upon traditional petitions for bankruptcy have also hamstrung the settlement negotiation teams in their own work, since the chance of protection from judicial lawsuit through Chapter 7 protection always looms above any settlement arrangement. After all, the reason why every single debt settlement program restricts itself to just those unsecured lines of credit also covered by the ever diminishing aegis of the bankruptcy laws isn't because of any failure of imagination among the negotiation professionals.

On the contrary, settlement agents dearly wish they could sink their teeth into educational loans, as once lay available before Chapter 7 statutes were altered to ignore, and pray that the medical lobbyists do not successfully so invalidate hospital bills from bankruptcy protection. At this moment, what with multinational corporations indulging their will upon the rights of the citizenry to demand a release from onerous monetary burdens, the debt settlement program underwritten by private companies might be the clearest step toward financial freedom our countrymen have left.

Book Review - Fab Girls Guide to Friendship Hardship, by Phoebe Kitanidis

Why won't anyone sit with me at lunch? Why aren't I in the popular crowd? These are the types of questions that cause tremendous angst for middle-school girls. When I was in junior high (our term for "middle school" back in the Stone Age), there weren't many places to go for the answers to the questions I had during those years. My parents had very few resources to consult, but today's parents are much more fortunate. The publishers of Discovery Girls magazine have developed a series of books called the Fab Girls Guides to help girls navigate the ups and downs of middle school.

So, who are the Fab Girls? They're fraternal twins, Carmen and Dallas Fabrulezziano. They may be twins, but they are totally different. They tell readers, "Discovery Girls asked us to help you through these crazy, confusing middle-school years. And who better to go through them with than a couple of fun Fab Girls who know exactly how you feel? We'll give it to you straight and tell you everything you need to know . . ."

I got hold of a copy of Fab Girls Guide to Friendship Hardship, by Phoebe Kitanidis, and it was filled with some great information for middle-school girls, such as how to tell the difference between good and bad friends, how to be the best friend you can be, how to meet new people, and how to find the friendships you truly deserve. Creative quizzes and sidebars make for fun and easy reading so that girls feel like they're chatting with a friend, not reading a lecture. The first four books in the series are:

Fab Girls Guide to Friendship Hardship (ISBN 978-1-934766-00-2)

Breaks down the solutions to friendship problems step-by-step, helping your middle-schooler identify poisonous friendships and showing her how to be the best friend she can be.

Fab Girls Guide to Sticky Situations (ISBN 978-1-934766-01-9)

What do you do when your deepest secret is blabbed to the entire school? Or when you tell your crush you like him and he doesn't like you back? By the last page, girls will be ready to deal with any situation.

Fab Girls Guide to Getting Through Tough Times (ISBN 978-1-934766-03-3)

True stories written by girls about their most private struggles--being betrayed by a friend, dealing with their parents' divorce, a death in the family.

Fab Girls Guide to Getting Your Questions Answered (ISBN 978-1-934766-04-0)

In this collection of real letters to Discovery Girls' advice columnist, girls will find answers to their most troubling questions about everything from family to friends to school to boys and more.

The books are $9.95 each or $29.95 for all four, plus shipping and handling. They may be ordered at DiscoveryGirls.com [http://www.discoverygirls.com/]. There's even a coupon in the back of the book for a free issue of Discovery Girls magazine. This is a wonderful new series for middle-school girls (or those soon-to-be)!

V I have spoken of you in old times With wet nurses and veteran rebels From where your beastly sorrow comes The brilliance of trembling water on your face And why it must be that I come near you I who dont want love but want the wind But want the gallop of the uncovered, upright sea And none had heard of you Neither dittany nor wild mushroom Of Cretan highlands, none Only God grants and guides your hand to me Here and there, carefully around the whole turn Of the faces seashore, the bay, the hair On the hill rippling off to the left Your body in the stance of the solitary pine Eyes of pride and of transparent Depth, in the house with an old china cabinet Of yellow lace and cypress wood Alone I wait for where youll first appear High on the veranda or under the gardens cobblestones With the horse of the saint and the egg of Easter Like from a wrecked wall painting Big as the little life wanted you, To hold within a little candle the stentorian volcanic glow So no one will have seen or heard Anything about you in the wilderness of dilapidated houses Neither the buried ancestors at the edge of the garden fence Nor the old woman with all her herbs Of you, only I, and maybe the music That is concealed inside me but shall return more strongly Of you, the unformed breast of twelve years Turning toward the future and the red crater Of you, a bitter odor finds the body And like a pin punctures memory And here the soil, here the doves, here our ancient earth. VI I have seen much and ...

How the Best IT Departments Take the "HELP!" Out of Help Desk

Since the dawn of the computer age users and computer professionals have had an uneasy relationship describing and responding-to computer problems such as unknown functionality, software bugs, hardware problems and similar issues.

In fact, such was the volume of issues reported by users throughout the years that an entire IT field grew and flourished in order to manage the exchange of information. Today, this field is known as the Help Desk and it is responsible for the ongoing management of user related computer issues. And although help desk departments are there to help, they are commonly associated with negative connotations such as poor service because the nature of the business is to deal with people in distress who are readily willing to offload their frustrations.

So what can a Help Desk department do to improve its image and customer relations? And what service should users expect when they report a fault to a help desk? Great help desks go beyond solving problems fast because that is sometimes not possible due to the nature of the fault.

Firstly, the approach that the help desk operator takes should be calm, structured and informative. This will help to address the users anxiety and open the channels of communication. The opening exchange should include the creation and explanation of a simple action plan.

Secondly, a help desk should provide product support such as help with an email application. But it is important to note that these departments do not have all the answers. Engineering and architectural teams design the infrastructure, applications or machines that the help desk support so escalation to more specialized teams is often necessary. If an incident is escalated the help desk should manage the ongoing communication with the user unless otherwise agreed with escalation staff. In either case there should be clarity around which department will update the user with an incident status.

Thirdly, the help desk should follow up unresolved calls. Even if the call was escalated to specialist staff the help desk staff should compare real actions against the original action plan that was created in the first contact. Any variation should be reported to the user in order to re-set expectations.

Lastly, a great help desk will reflect and value add whenever possible. Whether it be noticing patterns such as 'there are a spike of password reset calls the first Tuesday of every month' or 'an unusually large number of users are having difficulties with the new mail merging function' the information that help desks collect can be used in many different ways to alleviate or sometimes even prevent any impact of a known problem.

In summary, the best help desk departments are not necessarily the fastest or the friendliest. They are the departments that instil confidence in users that action will be taken and communications delivered as agreed.

The Hydrogen Murder by Camille Minichino

Camille Minichino's debut novel introduces us to sleuth Gloria Lamerino, who has returned to her hometown of Revere, Massachusetts after a thirty year absence teaching physics in Berkeley, California. As the book opens she has already contracted to be a scientific expert helping the Revere Police Department in solving murders.

Soon after, a student, whom Gloria knew in California and has also returned to his hometown of Revere (what are the odds?), is murdered. Dr. Lamerino is drawn into the murder on a personal level as several people close to the murder are acquaintances of hers from the same university and have all relocated to Revere, MA.

The mystery centers on the murdered scientist's research that claimed he had successfully created metallic hydrogen, a superconductive material with no resistance. Although its presence lasted only one-millionth of a second, there are promises of major industrial contracts and much money to be made by everyone in this research group.

Very soon, Lamerino hears rumors that Eric Bensen, the murdered scientist, hinted that some of the data had been falsified, the most serious crime in the scientific world. A print-out of the program Eric was running at the time of his murder may hold a clue to the identity of the killer.

In the midst of reacquainting herself with Revere, fending off over-protectiveness and possessiveness from an old boyfriend, and becoming attracted to the detective she is working with on the case, Lamerino devotes what little time she has left to deciphering the program, for clues. She notes three characters that appears at the end of the printout, which ultimately lead to the identity of Eric's murderer, but Lamerino unwittingly tips off the murderer, letting the individual know that she is aware of their identity. This mistake nearly costs her life, but the cavalry arrives in time to save her from the same fate as Eric.

Mainly, I enjoyed Minichino's setting of the hydrogen research and the details of the science behind it, because I am a chemist and found this aspect fascinating. Since Minichino is a physics professor herself, one wonders if the research was fictional or if there is an actual basis for the book. Whichever the case, Minichino's details make the science interesting and easily understood as Lamerino tries to educate her very non-scientific police detective and friends.

Minichino also puts nearly as much detail into the setting of Revere, a quaint suburb of Boston. Some of the characters seem almost cliché, such as the matchmaker best friend promising to find her a boyfriend, the cutthroat research professor determined to publish no matter the cost (is there any other kind?), the spurned and rejected wife and the pretty self-absorbed blonde.

There were other secondary mysteries that Minichino inserted to add intrigue but they quickly panned out to nothing and had little bearing on the outcome. For example, the rearrangement of action figures on Bensen's desk and the disappearance of a plastic Albert Einstein bust add to the suspense but it is quickly discovered to be the acts of a weeping girlfriend, nothing more.

I was disappointed that the resolution to the mystery was simply that the murdered scientist typed in his murderer's initials into the computer with the special character's font enabled. The murder of the research professor was the mere consequence of him solving the puzzle first and being silenced.

Mysteries are difficult to write, but this first novel is a good effort. I know that Minichino's writing improves since I have read "The Boric Acid Murder" the fifth in her series. The simplicity of this debut detracts from the enjoyment, but if you understand science research, the concept alone will entertain you.

Witch of the Westmoreland

First i worked on it ALL DAY LONG, starting at or around midmorning and didnt finish it till 4am the next day. there are BOUND to be mistakes. if you find any please be nice about it or keep them to yourself :) I got permission from Matthew Westberg bjerg.deviantart.com bjerg.deviantart.com to use his art to make a video for this song. Its such an imaginative story and i've always liked such things. Sadly i found that this song was much under appreciated. Extended Lyrics by Archie Fisher and the Arthens www.bardicarts.org Lyrics: Pale was the wounded knight, that bore the rowan shield Loud and cruel were the raven's cries that feasted on the field Saying "Beck water cold and clear will never clean your wound There's none but the witch of the Westmoreland can make thee hale and soond" So turn, turn your stallion's head 'til his red mane flies in the wind And the rider of the moon goes by and the bright star falls behind And clear was the paley moon when his shadow passed him by below the hills were the brightest stars when he heard the owlet cry Saying "Why do you ride this way, and wherefore came you here?" "I seek the Witch of the Westmorland that dwells by the winding mere" And it's weary by the Ullswater and the misty brake fern way Til throught the cleft in the Kirkstane Pass the winding water lay He said "Lie down, by brindled hound and rest ye, my good grey hawk And thee, my steed may graze thy fill for I must dismount and walk, But come when you hear my horn and ...
