Medical Billing Careers

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Since time immemorial, a career in medicine has been looked upon with prestige, and people consider it humanitarian and noble. A career in medicine calls for a lot of responsibility and the ability to update one's knowledge on the evolving medical technology. With the passage of time and innovation in the field of science, the medical profession is becoming very challenging. There are a number of fields within the medical career, such as Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Management, Medical Insurance Billing, Medical Office Billing and several others.

Basic Requirements For Medical Billing

The job of medical billing involves a lot of hard work and vast knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, coding and proper completion of forms. In addition, you need to have basic computer knowledge and a typing speed of at least 35 words per minute. A good temperament is another important characteristic that the person needs to possess, since he is required to deal with a number of patients, their attendants, doctors, medical representatives and other office personnel.

Job Outlook And Employment Opportunities

Medical billing is one of the fastest growing careers in healthcare. The importance of medical billing personnel is on the rise, since several insurance companies and the government are continuously spending substantial time and money to nix fraud and abusive practices. Due to this demand, various companies and practices are constantly on the lookout for trained and experienced medical billers. Personnel could find positions with doctors, hospitals, nursing homes, insurance companies, legal offices, rehabilitation centers, legal offices and consulting firms or they could also work independently.

They could set up an electronic billing system through their personal computers. Independent medical billers can also work as insurance specialists and consultants. The job is lucrative and revolves around helping patients and medical professionals calculate their insurance bills.

Some of the other job opportunities that are included within medical billing are as follows:

o Billing Specialist

o Coding Specialist

o Medical Collector

o Patient Account Representative

o Claims Analyst

o Claims Processor

o Reimbursement Specialist Claims Reviewer

o Electronic Claims Processor

o Billing Coordinator

o Claims Assistant Professional

Work Culture

The work culture of medical billers is usually part of an office setup. More often than not, the personnel do not work in close proximity to where patients are diagnosed. They generally have billing offices and services in large corporate buildings, in small suburban offices and in the offices of doctors. They usually work during the day, from Monday to Friday, forty hours a week. However, there are times when, in insurance companies, they are required to work late at night. They are paid well for working overtime and their services are much appreciated by the medical establishment and patients alike.

The Marijuana Policy Tipping Point: A conversation with author Christopher Fichtner, MD

Christopher Fichtner is a psychiatrist and the former mental health director for the state of Illinois. In his new book, Cannabinomics: The Marijuana Policy Tipping Point www.cannabinomics.com , Fichtner predicts that marijuana policy is about to change radically. As Fichtner points out, three public policy trajectories converging. The medical marijuana movement is gaining momentum. People are increasingly waking up to the fact that drug prohibition creates more public health problems than it solves. And, in the same way that the Great Depression caused people to reprioritize how we spend our public dollars, the current economic crisis has got people thinking that bringing the biggest cash crop in the US out into the open might not be such a bad idea. Reason.tv's Paul Feine sat down with Dr. Fichtner to learn more about the imminent marijuana policy tipping point. Approximately 10 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine and Alex Manning. Stieg Larsson, The Thriller Books Millennium Series and His Dangerous Life

Stieg Larsson is one of those authors whose life story is as interesting a journey as that of the characters he created for his novels. Even more so perhaps, because it is real life, not fiction.

Larson's first career was in the largely harmless and safe profession of graphic designer and photographer. But the young Larsson had bigger things on his mind. As a science fiction fan from a young age, Larsson loved books and writing and as he matured, he slowly transformed himself into a journalist. More importantly, he transformed himself into a committed crusader against right wing extremist groups in Sweden and in Europe.

He was inspired in this regard by the life on his grandfather Sverin Bostrom, a well known anti fascist in his day, who was imprisoned by the Nazis during the second world war for his Anti Nazi beliefs.

Larsson became an expert on right wing extremism, giving lectures for Scotland Yard on the subject, and eventually became the editor of an influential anti extremist magazine, Expo.

Stieg's expertise did not come without risk. For the last 15 years of his life, with his public profile growing, Larsson and his life long partner, Eva Gabrielson, an anti Vietnam War demonstrator in her youth, lived under constant threat to their lives from underground extremist groups. The couple avoided being seen in public, lived in a shuttered house, and kept details about their lives as secret as possible. Knowing a good deal about how right wing extremist groups worked, Larsson actually wrote a book for the Swedish Union of Journalists, on how journalists should protect themselves from threats.

It was in fact the isolation brought about by the threats, that led Stieg to write his novels, alone at home at night, as a form of relaxation. The three novels together form what is now known as "The Millennium Series."

Larsson died suddenly of a heart attack in 2004 and given who he was, many questioned if there was more to his death than the public were permitted to know. Foul play has been repeatedly denied, but as we all know, many things can be denied.

The three novels "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest" were published posthumously. Regarded as innovative and unique in their genre when they first appeared, in the intervening short years between then and now, the books quickly became international best sellers and have sold to date, more than 27 million copies. The novels are now popular books on audio, all three being read by English actor Simon Vance.

An unfortunate epilogue to Steigs story is that he failed to make a will, the end result being that his life long partner and confidant Eva Gabrielson (they were not married) has received none of the wealth his books have earned following his untimely death, the estate being awarded by the Swedish Courts to Larsson's closest relatives, his father and brother. Bitter court battles have ensued.

Reader's have you drawn up your will?

Feeling Fatigued? Lift Recliners Make Up For That Depleted Energy

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With the passage of time our bodies lose their strength. One of the best ways to cope up with declining energy in the old age is to make use of lift recliners. These lift recliners reduce the amount of movement required to get out of chair and hence the effort and stress put on the body. These kinds of chairs are the ideal sitting places for those who cant move out of their chair very easily due to pain in joints. These kinds of lift recliners are perfect in usage and style. They are excellent supplements to the living room furniture along with a perfect accessory for the tired joints. There are different ways of classifying these lift recliners. They are available in a plethora of colors and chair positions to offer the customers something that they would like for themselves.

Now, some manufacturers list icons along their genre of lift recliners for identification purposes otherwise the customers can also refer to specifications of the chair like its weight, height and depth to see whether it fits their size or not. The width of a user from one rear end to the other should determine the breadth of the lift recliners to be used by him. The weight is also an important factor to be considered before choosing the chair because a wrong selection means wastage of money and discomfort caused while using the chair. The manufacturers list the amount of weight a specific chair can bear. So, make your pick according to the maximum weight capacity of a particular chair. Don't go to the shop or browse the internet store for lift recliners without measuring your kilos on the weighing machine.

Today, all kinds of these chairs are present on the market to let the users have moments of comfort and solace on their lift recliners. It all depends on your body weight and shape of the body. There are heavy duty lift recliners for those with some extra amount of bulge and wide sized for ones with a wider body stature. However, people with extra large stature of heights of more than 6.2 inches should opt for x-large chairs which can adjust them perfectly. Larger of these chairs are available for those who have a tall frame of 5.10 to 6.2 inches.

There are many kinds of positions available in these chairs. These vary from two, three to infinite position chairs. Any one should think about the position according to the level of comfort required while using the chair.

Now, the two position chairs are perfect for those who are still in the initial stage of lost body vitality and don't need the complete reclining position to carry all their tasks. The three position recline is a bit more advanced than the two position recliner because it offers the users full rest but the horizontal 180 degrees resting position is not attained. Due to the medium level incline position, this chair can also be used for napping along with watching TV. You can comfortably enjoy an afternoon siesta on this chair. The final version is the infinite lift recliners. This chair is designed to provide support to every body part. This chair is a magical device because it recuperates the tired muscles of both back and the legs because of dual motors installed for these body parts. Apart from that, the user can also rest with legs placed at a higher position than the chest. One can also apply it for a full resting position with the back aligned in a straight angle. So, get these lift recliners and rejuvenate your body with all the deprived energy.

The Glass Rainbow: A Dave Robicheaux Novel

The Glass Rainbow: A Dave Robicheaux Novel Review

From the first page of his shattering new novel, James Lee Burke's gorgeous prose enfolds the reader, who cannot help but be enthralled, to the extent that one finds oneself wishing that the book could just go on forever. Or at least that was my own feeling, so completely was I under the author's spell. And when the stunning conclusion does come, that sentiment was only reinforced.

It is nothing new to say that James Lee Burke's writing includes perfectly drawn portraits of even minor characters, as well as lush descriptions of the Louisiana of his and his protagonist's birth. In this case, he also brings to life the history of the area, in its plantation society, pre-Emancipation days, primarily through two of its characters. One is Kermit Abelard, the scion of the wealthy Abelard family, with its historical New Orleans prominence, who has been romancing Dave's adopted daughter, Alafair, as the novel opens. Dave objects to the liaison, mostly because of the large difference in age, as well as his suspicions about the family and its morality, or lack thereof; another aspect is the relationship between Kermit and Robert Weingart, an oft-convicted felon whose part in Kermit's life is of questionable motive and definition. Robert has become a celebrated author as well, and that in turn plays a part in the two men's influence on Alafair, herself an aspiring novelist.

The other old-Louisiana player is Layton Blanchet, a millionaire who hires Clete Purcell, Dave's life-long friend from their days with the New Orleans P.D., now working as a p.i., to find out who his wife, as he suspects, is sleeping with. Clete plays a major part in this book, where we find him going through suicidal and homicidal rages, as indeed Dave does as well.

The tale begins when Dave, a New Iberia sheriff's detective working on his own time after the rape and murder of seven women, all very young, black and poor, visits a penal work gang outside Natchez, Mississippi to interview a man whose young sister is among the victims, and who claims he knows the identity of the killer. When that man is himself murdered, and the body of another young girl is discovered, Dave and Clete decide that since the deaths of young black girls is likely to go uninvestigated if they don't do the investigating themselves, they chart a course which endangers their lives and those of Alafair and Dave's wife, Molly, among others. More killings follow, and motives are obscure at best. And we are told that no matter the jeopardy in which Dave and Clete are placed, as Clete is fond of saying, "the Bobbsey twins from Homicide are forever." Their friendship goes back more than three decades; both men still are haunted by flashbacks from Vietnam; they have both gone from New Orleans patrolmen to detectives, and their loyalty to each other is boundless. Neither is the reader immune to their goodness and charm, and we must profoundly hope that the Bobbsey twins from Homicide do indeed go on forever. Very highly recommended.

The Glass Rainbow: A Dave Robicheaux Novel Overview

James Lee Burke’s eagerly awaited new novel finds Detective Dave Robicheaux back in New Iberia, Louisiana, and embroiled in the most harrowing and dangerous case of his career. Seven young women in neighboring Jefferson Davis Parish have been brutally murdered. While the crimes have all the telltale signs of a serial killer, the death of Bernadette Latiolais, a high school honor student, doesn’t fit: she is not the kind of hapless and marginalized victim psychopaths usually prey upon. Robicheaux and his best friend, Clete Purcel, confront Herman Stanga, a notorious pimp and crack dealer whom both men despise. When Stanga turns up dead shortly after a fierce beating by Purcel, in front of numerous witnesses, the case takes a nasty turn, and Clete’s career and life are hanging by threads over the abyss.

Adding to Robicheaux’s troubles is the matter of his daughter, Alafair, on leave from Stanford Law to put the finishing touches on her novel. Her literary pursuit has led her into the arms of Kermit Abelard, celebrated novelist and scion of a once prominent Louisiana family whose fortunes are slowly sinking into the corruption of Louisiana’s subculture. Abelard’s association with bestselling ex-convict author Robert Weingart, a man who uses and discards people like Kleenex, causes Robicheaux to fear that Alafair might be destroyed by the man she loves. As his daughter seems to drift away from him, he wonders if he has become a victim of his own paranoia. But as usual, Robicheaux’s instincts are proven correct and he finds himself dealing with a level of evil that is greater than any enemy he has confronted in the past.

Set against the backdrop of an Edenic paradise threatened by pernicious forces, James Lee Burke’s The Glass Rainbow is already being hailed as perhaps the best novel in the Robicheaux series.

Perfectly Plum: Unauthorized Essays On the Life, Loves And Other Disasters of Stephanie Plum, Trenton Bounty Hunter (Smart Pop) Review

Perfectly Plum: Unauthorized Essays On the Life, Loves And Other Disasters of Stephanie Plum, Trenton Bounty Hunter (Smart Pop) Overview

** COMPLETELY UNAUTHORIZED **

Speculating about the cultural metaphors in Janet Evanovich's wildly popular mystery series (which includes 11 books, from One for the Money to Eleven on Top), this anthology takes a look at lingerie-buyer-turned-bounty-hunter Stephanie Plum and catalogs her bad luck with cars (she's blown up quite a few), her good luck with men, her unorthodox approach to weapon storage, and the rich tapestry of her milieu: Trenton, New Jersey, also known as The Burg. The contributors praise the way the series smartly spoofs that familiar chick-lit epiphany—I have a bad job and what I really want is a goodman!—in "Bounty Hunting as a Metaphor for Dating," "Why Stephanie Should Quit Her Job . . . but Never Will," and  "Nothing Better than a Bad Boy Gone Good." Several essays veer from the chick-lit perspective and focus instead on the comic theme of luck and chance that ties Stephanie to the barroom gamblers and gangster meanies of her home town in "Luck of the Italian?: Skill Versus Chance."

Nutcase

Nutcase Review

3 1/2 stars (rounded up because it was a fun read)

2nd in the Kate Holly series.

This book picks up 2 months after the end of What Looks Like Crazy leaving Kate evicted from her office and looking for a new place to see her patients. Her and Jay are still working on their "marriage," which is technically ended, but they both want to work it out. She's still seeing a couple of patients from the first book and she has some new ones, including a woman who thinks she is Marie Osmond.

This book is just as funny as the first. Everyone in Kate's life is a little crazy, including herself. Jay is the most sane one of everyone and he claims she attracts these crazy people. There is a little bit of mystery as someone is setting fires in the area and Jay is "on the case," but of course, Kate gets herself involved a little bit, too.

Once again, if you like Stephanie Plum, you will like this one. Nothing deep or difficult to follow, just a funny, easy read.

10 Poems That I Wrote - Loved by Many!

'Nature's Seasons'

The four stages,
Reflecting those ages
Of man ... and his minions,
'neath trapdoors descending
Past mirror balls powdery lighting .. to endings,
The dreamlike mystical psycho paths bending,
Where lavender scented souls attempt mendings,
At last! Sunshine!... summer dazed!
Cool splashings of sand-spattered, beach-castling duels,
Smelling barbecued feasts inside zinc lobstered fools..
The Sun Goddess' zenith, the sparkling of jewels,
Horizons of shimmering scorched parching pools,
...still descending, exits stage left,
The chillings of zephyrs ice over thy breath,
And tall verdant oaks, their petticoats wither,
The crunching browned scents, striped colors to dither,
Those scarves as they play through devolving fares,
And nature's beasts rushing quick scurries to lairs ..
The crystalline witch queen of whipped southern squalls,
Casts shattering sleets and dark shadows to all,
So frozen troupes whirl 'midst frosted regrets,
As winter slays youthful enchantments in nets.
.. But hark, the buddings of life returning to prance,
And carnivals passing through oaken scents chance,
The sonnets of springtime completing the wheel,
Four stages of man .. God's seasons shalt kneel.

Boredom'

'Midst tyranny of hours,
She whiles away a storm,
Beneath two falling towers
Strange faces capture form.

Perceptions bleed to mystery,
The shattered ticking clocks,
A tome of withered history
Discovered 'neath those rocks.

And Gods from perches spying,
Yawning at the farce,
The battlefields lay dying
As jaded angels pass.

The lethargy of ages,
Shall tumble into dreams,
An omnibus of stages
And sentiments in reams.

When Earth's time sands the glasses,
And sadness passes by,
Count not the dream that passes,
That lengthy, tortured sigh.

'Midst tyranny of hours,
She whiles away a storm,
Beneath two falling towers,
Boredom's questing shows no scorn.

'New York City'

That swaggering, jazz-like lexicon,
Where Broadway dreams ignite,
The bustle and sass of Midtown,
And Central Park jaunts by night.

Swanky suits romance on 5th Avenue,
The Plaza and Waldorf come grandly to view,
And Radio City and Carnegie Hall,
Spill big band arrangements to 'hattan crowds' thrall.

That Liberty Gal
With torch raised on high,
While Brooklyn and Queens,
The Bronx sail by.

The Yankees swing grandly,
The cheering crowds loud,
The rumbling of subways,
American proud.

Empire State Building,
Rockefeller blue,
Mustard on hot-dogs,
A New York review.

Bloomingdales and Macys,
Tiffanys by night,
Madison Square Gardens,
And Times Square delight.

It's the city of power,
The World's capital show,
New York through the ages,
All swagger and glow!

'Los Angeles Dream'

Burbank, Pasadena, Hollywood glam,
Rodeo Drive, Sunset live, Boulevard jam.

L-A-X, Long Beach sex, Melrose Place chic,
Boutique flair, in Bel Air, Western Coast speak.

Bev'ly Hills, Disney thrills, Brentwood charm,
Venice Beach, hip-hop beats, muscle boy's arm.

Chinatown, Downtown, Hollywood sign,
Summer dayze, Monterey, L.A. city time.

Burbank, Pasadena, Hollywood glam,
Rodeo Drive, Sunset live, Californian cram!

'Sleep'

Oh child of slumber,
To while away the night,
And pastel shaded quicksands
engorging souls so light.

Oh child of slumber,
Where doest thou roam so free?
A kaleidoscopic dreamscape
bleeds slowly to the sea.

Oh child of slumber,
When hooded owls shalt call,
Unconscious woodland cradles,
and lovers mother all.

Blessed child of slumber,
To hear those gentle sighs,
Your soft breaths fill a cosmos
with covert truths so wise.

Beloved child of slumber,
Betwixt angelic rows,
Float silkspun quilted cloudshapes
and cupid's feted bows.

Until a journey's closure,
A dragon's curse shalt be,
And winding blooms descending
whence daylight sets us free.

Oh child of slumber,
To while away the night,
And pastel shaded quicksands
engorging souls so light.

.... go to sleep.

'+ The Malediction Of Camelot +'

Hark, a jester's pledge shalt not dethrone a Queen's ascent,
And serfdom's plight aflame with wrath, to God's lament.

Thou ardor mauls the tempered soul that deigns to seek,
A ransom's quest as martyred hope instructs thy weak.

On hallowed grounds when knights renounce the Grail's stain,
As maidens tempt, a bounty's wage adjourns to wane.

'pon moonlit shores when fabled charms shalt cease to be,
The coven's share of plundered wealth for man to see.

As squalling dusk shall claim a price that none shalt bear,
A monarch's grave invoking scorn to tempests fare.

And celestial hosts returning 'midst the sacred hearth,
To guide the burdened earthly realms to Heaven's path

'History's Tome'

When history's tome shall cascade to a graven end,
And spirit's glass replete with mirth, no blight to tend.

The hours shall stall, the ornery pledge must cease to dwell,
Unquiet states, the banshee's waul will all but quell.

As nomads singe enchanted lands and kingdoms fall,
Muhammad's whim ensconced in tombs shall smite them all.

The questing souls returning to the holy lamb,
And scales shall weigh the penance worth as lovers damn.

As fortune's grace shall guide young fools in ways of yore,
And magic's realms reveal their lusts to bloodstained war.

When silken oaths betray a prince as legends grow,
Iniquities doth multiply and harvests sow.

Amid the bedlam, beauty's chance may yet return,
The evils of a fallen world bewitch to spurn.

Yet pure souls transcend the gloom of cheerless plains,
And Christ's lament shall pay his fold when love remains.

'The Lunar Goddess'

The doors to perception,
Second left, past Reception ...
Wild and crazed, from Elyssian haze
her Siren's call ... the bane of All.
But must We tread and winds the path,
Her warmth yet cruel, nurtures each hearth,
Learn well Her song
Fear not the curse,
The Feminine Wisdom
has healed His Earth.
Diana, Artemis, Lady of the Moonlight,
From slumber awake, the ending night...

The doors to perception,
Second left, past Reception.

'Poverty'

Penury be damned!
That wretched void of want,
of lack, the stringent pause
of night-time's follies
and universal laws.
Gilt-edged rains trade showering stacks
of chips at games, of such, ye lacks! and
cultured, white starched parties on cultivated lawns
lay luxuries for monied youths, chide idle beggar's yawns.
Grim, grief-stained avenues masking hessianed lairs,
Far placed from pleasant folk casting hardened, soulless stares.
Oh such curses on the workless paths, such punishments such pains,
That ye shall arch with industries, to succour 'midst your gains, so
Penury be damned!
That wretched void of want,
of lack, the stringent pause
to night-time's follies
and universal laws.

'Depression'

Deflation ...
that steady spiralling, downwards .... darkness .... falling ...
'Did You follow that snow-white rabbit into the depths Alice?' silence

Eclipse

Eclipse Review

I love this book along with her other one Essence. Hannah the character had a spiritual journey that compares to my own. This should be made into a movie and can inspire and motivate millions of readers. A MUST HAVE BOOK!

Eclipse Overview

Hannah was brought up in a family with strong Christian values. As a young lady she began experimenting with different lifestyles and interest. Along the journey of life she became complacent and bored and decided she wanted more from her life than what was modeled in the lives of her parents and church family. She became frustrated with trying to please the people who were closest to her and decided to embark on a journey to find whom she was in Christ. She was tired of religion and dressing up the outside while feeling empty on the inside. Along the way, she experimented with homosexuality and other self-defeating behavior. Out of her frustration was born a desire to have a relationship with the Lord and this journey with fought with many trials and setbacks. Will Hannah find the peace she so desperately desire and a relationship with Christ?

Making Homeownership Easier

Image : http://www.flickr.com

For Americans, owning a home is almost a right of passage and is definitely a big piece of the American dream. However, the responsibilities of homeownership can be a bit daunting. There are ways to make owning your own home a much more pleasant experience.

Building Equity - By making an extra payment to your principal every month or every year, you can reduce your balance quicker and pay less in interest. Even a small amount like $50 to $100 per month can make a drastic difference in your balance, which increases your equity. Just make sure you send a separate check from your regular monthly payment and indicate that it is to be applied to principal only in the memo section of the check.

Take Care of Your Home - Experts recommend saving 1-3% of your home's value every year for regular maintenance and repairs. While it may seem like a lot, having the 3% in your account would be better than not having it when a major repair comes up.

Insurance - Make sure your insurance covers the replacement value of both your home and any possessions inside. It is smart to update your policy every few years to make sure you aren't under or over insured.

Upgrading - Keep up with recent trends in the real estate market to make sure your home is ready to sell when you are.

Impressions Count - Keeping up appearances on the exterior of your home (your "curb appeal") not only makes your neighbors happy, but it also keeps your home values up.

Safety Always - Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are important safety items to have in your home. If your home doesn't have them, get them installed. Change out the batteries every six months to make sure they are working properly. The best way to remember this is to change the batteries every time you have to change your clocks for the beginning and ending of Daylight Savings Time. If you live in Arizona, you may want to remember to change it at Easter and Halloween.

Painting - Determining a shade to paint your walls depends on whether you want to sell your home soon or plan on staying in it for a while. If you plan on selling your home within a year, choose neutral colors so that they appeal to a larger group of buyers.

Know Your Place - If your home or neighborhood no longer fits your lifestyle, it's definitely time to consider moving. Contacting a Realtor will help you with selling your current home and making sure you find your perfect home to buy later.®

Getting Your Ex Boyfriend Back - DON'T Call Him! Make Him Regret That He Ever Broke Up With You!

Do you think that this is crazy advice? Do you honestly believe that you need to call your ex constantly, until he relents and asks you to come back? Well, all I can say is, you are living a pipe dream - you will never get your ex boyfriend back this way!

The only reason why I KNOW this, is because I was stupid, just like you, and called my ex, day and night. I was actually convinced that he would give in eventually, and beg me to come back to him. Guess where all my efforts got me? NOWHERE!!

He got so fed up with me calling all the time, that he dropped me like a not cake! Just like you, I was also told to leave him alone for a while to cool off - did I listen, NO. Of course, I haven't seen him again, to this day.

Please, listen to me, I do know what I'm talking about, and I don't want you to end up like I was - totally unhappy and alone! I really do know how much you're hurting right now, but I can also tell you that it will only last for a little while - it gets easier as each day goes by.

You need to be positive right now, so keep telling yourself that you WILL get your ex boyfriend back. If needs be, say it first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and a whole lot during the day as well. Just be positive that it will happen, and it will - definitely!

You see, your ex might be real mad at you now, but as the days go by, the anger will get less and less, and he'll start to think about how good you were together. He'll also start to think about how good you were for him, and will start to miss you a lot, and regret ever breaking up with you.

If he doesn't hear from you at all, or doesn't ever see you, his longing for you will become stronger and stronger, until he can't take it anymore. You WILL get your ex boyfriend back, because when he's missing you like crazy, he'll call you and ask you to get back together again.

Southern Home Floor Plans - The Subject of New Book

Image : http://www.flickr.com

An important new book of Southern home floor plans has been published by the Southern Architecture Foundation. Southern Architecture Illustrated (ISBN: 0-932958-23-0) is a compendium of over two hundred and fifty photographs, which illustrate over a hundred residential designs and forty-two floor plans. This invaluable design volume was originally published by Harman Publishing Company of Atlanta in 1931. The original had a foreword written by Lewis Crook, A.I.A. from Atlanta; and it had an introduction written by Dwight Baum, A.I.A. of New York City. The selection of plans and illustrations of outstanding suburban and country homes in America's Southland was made by a committee of prominent local architects. The Southern Architecture Foundation's new slipcase publication of this landmark work is the S.A.F.'s second publication, the first being The Architecture of James Means - Georgia Classicist, which was issued in the fall of 2001. Southern Architecture Illustrated presents a heady look into an almost forgotten pre-Depression world. This architecture of Southern coastal vernacular home plans includes some of the ritziest early twentieth century suburban and country houses in the South. What makes the presentation so particularly appealing is the included floor plans - and also the shadowy, quaint, green sepia-type photographs with their chiaroscuro quality.

Although there are lots of porticoes, nonetheless the majority of plans represented are of modern-style homes - new yet classic - with the particular taste of the South in the antique; in fine fabrics, prints, and painting; in fine landscaping with every Southern hospitality in mind, awaiting the stylish party guests to arrive. These plans featured Southern cottage house plans morning rooms, sleeping porches, and drawing rooms which were decorated by exclusive firms such as Porter and Porter - Interiors - of Atlanta's Peachtree Street; and of James Blauvelt of New York City.

The genesis of Southern Architecture Illustrated lies in a magazine called Southern Architect and Building News, which originated in different format in 1882, and then began regular publication in 1889 in Atlanta under the directorship of distinguished architect Thomas Morgan (1857-1940) of Atlanta. The Harman Publishing Company took over publication of the magazine in 1910, and Henry Harman (1856 - 1926) became the publisher of the magazine. The original edition of Southern Architecture Illustrated is dedicated to Henry Harman. His son Harry Jr. became the business manager of the magazine. Later on Ernest Denmark (1899 - 1980) who started as an employee of this publishing concern while still in is twenties, went on to become the last editor of the magazine until it ended. It was Denmark who edited Southern Architecture Illustrated even though his name does not appear in the book. The Harman Publishing Company defined "The South" to include the old Confederacy of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas and Virgina; as well as the border states Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Oklahoma, and District of Columbia. Thirty-eight of the illustrated houses are in Georgia; another sixteen are in Tennessee; there are seven each from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Missouri; there are six each from Alabama, Texas, and Virginia; three are from Florida; two are from Oklahoma; and there are one each from the rest of the states and D.C.

On the 276th page of Southern Architecture Illustrated appeared an advertisement for the Southern Architect and Building News which stated that it had been in continuous publication since 1882, and that it had the modest widespread circulation in the seventeen states of the South. Original copies can be viewed at Emory University, Charlotte Public Library, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the Atlanta History Center. Originals of the magazine, which cost fifty cents each originally, now routinely sell for from ten to twenty dollars. The original print run was 5000 copies. Southern Architecture Illustrated cost five dollars when it was first published in 1931. It was to be part of a planned series of like books. However, the Depression finished the company and magazine off in 1932. Now, a clean copy of Southern Architecture Illustrated sells for over five hundred dollars. The present print run of 1000 copies has its own slip case, which faithfully mirrors the style of the original green-clothed cover which was embossed in gold.

Movie Review - Elmer Gantry (1960)

ELMER GANTRY is one hopping good story of a fast talking appliance salesman from the Bible Belt who, back in the days of the Prohibition and Speak-Easies, cons his way up the steps of success and transforms into a fiery preacher who can agitate the masses in every direction he wants.

He builds up a considerable following in Zenith, Kansas as the eager sidekick of Sharon Falconer, an evangelist who has more truth in her soul than Elmer. Gantry milks the whole enterprise for whatever its worth until the tragic ending when the transformation of this super huckster emerges as the principle character arc of the whole plot.

Adapted from Sinclair Lewis's book by the same title, director Richard Brooks created a classic indictment of those revivalists who manipulate the masses for their own ends by using the Jesus's message of love as a shield and subterfuge.

The movie was nominated for 5 Oscars in 1961 won 3 of them - Best Actor in a Leading Role for Burt Lancaster, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Shirley Jones and Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium for Richard Brooks.

Elmer Gantry (played by considerable fire and brimstone by Burt Lancaster) starts his journey as a big time loser, a traveling appliance salesman in the 20s who is more successful at cracking up his drinking buddies with lewd jokes and seducing young women for one night stands than anything else. Always broke, always moving from one town to another, but endowed by the obvious gift of bombastic rhetoric, he finds his calling under the tent of the revivalist Sharon Falconer (played by the incredibly beautiful Jean Simmons).

Despite Falconer's initial reluctance, the fast-talking fast-moving Gantry manages to win her trust to deliver his first sermon as a guest preacher which ends up as a resounding success.

Many other such sermons follow: "Sin. Sin, Sin. You're all sinners. You're all doomed to perdition. You're all goin' to the painful, stinkin', scaldin', everlastin' tortures of a fiery hell, created by God for sinners, unless, unless, unless you repent" is one example to the type of delivery unleashed by Gantry in lethal dozes.

Shooting up the success graph with alarming ease, Gantry moves the whole tent-based rural operation to Zenith, Kansas, an urban setting that scares Falconer's cautious business manager. But when the town guarantees to pay the Falconer operation $30,000 upfront, the deed is done and the troupe moves into Zenith with a marching band, clowns and great fanfare.

Falconer, Gantry and their team promise to revive the fire of devotion in the souls of Zenith's citizens and fill the empty pews of the local churches with new parishioners. In return, the local churches promise not to hold any meetings while the Falconer is in town to maximize the proceeds. Falconer and Gantry deliver precisely that and in the process their relationship moves from a professional to a very personal level.

One of the key roles in this movie is that of the Pulitzer-prize winner veteran journalist Jim Lefferts (played with great reserve and credibility by Arthur Kennedy) who is the ace reporter for the local Zenith daily.

Lefferts provides the skeptical, secular, pro-scientific counterpoint to Gantry's high-flying Bible-thumping hellfire and brimstone rhetoric. Even when Gantry is down and vulnerable to attacks, Lefferts sticks to his own professional principles and refuses to exploit scandalous stories that may or may not be true, regardless of their impact on the circulation numbers.

As such, the Lefferts character stands as a symbol of objectivity whose vision is not clouded by the dust of fickle emotions easily kicked up by revivalism. He successfully portrays the counterpoint view that unbridled religious fervor is perhaps not the only source of morality in civic life.

Another important part belongs to Lulu Bains (played by the angelic Shirley Jones who truly gives her soul to this supporting role) who is the girl that Gantry, back in his early days when no one knew him, had a one night stand with and ceremoniously dumped the next morning without even saying goodbye, except for a cynical "Merry Xmas" he scribbles on the bedroom mirror with her lipstick while she is still sleeping .

Now years later Lulu meets Gantry again in Zenith, this time working as a girl in a house of ill repute against which Gantry launches a public clean-up campaign. As the citizens of Zenith follow Gantry's lead in media-covered nightly raids on the speak-easy hideouts and brothels, Lulu exacts her revenge with devastating effectiveness.

Gantry's hypocrisy bits him in the rear, but not for long. Repenting how she framed an unsuspecting Gantry in her apartment with the aid of her pimp and a photographer for hire, she recants her accusations and admits the frame up, thus restoring a reviled Gantry back to his burning pulpit. Again, Brooks allows us to have a peek into unconventional sources of common virtue.

The film ends with a spectacular scene in which total devastation visits the newly opened tabernacle that Falconer has dreamed of for so long. The end both reveals the weakness in the way in which Falconer approached her faith, as well as the way the same faith has transformed an ordinary girl from the boondocks into a truly spiritual being with healing powers.

Gantry, on the other hand although he is offered everything he ever dreamed of on a golden plate, refuses to take over Falconer's mantle and moves on for the next thing in his life.

He turns his back to true power and even more riches and simply walks away because for the first time in his life he has discovered something in his soul that is more true and more precious than all the external power he managed to grab through a life of deception and manipulation.

The movie ends with that great note that sometimes divine love will visit us at exactly those times when we have the courage to walk away from that relentless desire to acquire the same love by force, through our own efforts and conniving.

A 9 out of 10.

Readings for Remembrance: A Collection for Funerals and Memorial Services

Readings for Remembrance: A Collection for Funerals and Memorial Services Review

This book offers the widest variety of all possible sentiments one would care to use at a memorial or funeral service, with quotes from Yeats, Joyce, Dante, St. Augustine, Lao-Tzu, Praxilla of Sicyon, Rilke, Ovid, Virgil, Tolstoy, the Papago, the Aztec, the Maya, the priest Fujiwara No Toshinari, a Buddhist aphorism, a Hindu teaching, Homer, Sophocles, Proust, to name but a few. The book is arranged in sections, each section addressing a different aspect of grief: Why We Gather; Raw Grief and Bitter Mourning; Mysteries: What is Death? What Are Time and Space?; Transformations; Heroes and Heroines, Great and Simple; Timeless Praise in Scripture and Verse; Meditations on Wisdom Coming Slowly; Healing, Changing, Moving On. In the back of the book is a list of music suggestions for the service. I found the book to be not only wonderful for its stated purpose but also as an ideal gift to give on the anniversary date of a loved one's death. Also, I have used quotes from the book in condolence letters. In times of grief we are asked to be our most eloquent, when really, we have been rendered incapacitated, the headless body, with "Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears." (Wordsworth)

Readings for Remembrance: A Collection for Funerals and Memorial Services Overview

"My aim in gathering these readings has been to counter the isolation that visits the bereaved in our society," writes Eleanor Munro in her wonderful introduction, "to remind us all that loss is the fundamental human experience, universally shared and collectively survived generation after generation." In Readings for Remembrance, she brings together a rich and thoughtful selection of writings from a vast range of sources--from scripture and hymns, Milton and Montaigne, to Stevens, D. H. Lawrence, and other modern and postmodern poets--as well as useful indexes and suggestions for music.

Examining the ways we respond to death, the importance of memorial services and ritual, and how we pay tribute to loved ones, the writings collected here offer profound wisdom and solace for both reader and audience.

Is the Right's Media Message Wrong?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Obama's popularity ratings continue to plummet. The passage of the health care and financial reform, which should have triggered celebration on the blue side of the aisle, don't seem to be giving any up tick to the president's PR position. The BP spill, and the administration's glacial reaction to it, hasn't helped the President's cause much and there seems to be an uncomfortable internal battle between the President and those in his party that are running for reelection.

This is a prime opening for the Republicans, yet in many ways it's the Republicans who truly seem at war with one another. From the media's perspective, the party of Reagan now seems to view "moderate' as a term only surpassed in disdain by that deadly label - "liberal".

The Democrats are doing their best to portray Republicans as the party of 'no" and unless they begin to propose workable alternatives to the Democrat's agenda, they run the risk of being viewed mainly as obstructionists, as opposed to problem solvers. Whereas the county does seem to be veering to the right, any true success will most likely not come by making a hard right. Britain tried that and their Conservatives paid for it. It took a centrist, David Cameron, to begin to bring Britain's conservatives back to the forefront.

Michael Steele doesn't seem to be the chairman that the RNC needs at this time. As Obama's ratings nosedive, the Republicans need a strategic co-coordinator to rally the troops and come up with a strategic unified message, as opposed to several splintered messages. The party also needs to develop some strong presidential front runners. Sarah Palin is definitely a strong brand name, and a wealthy one. ABC new estimated that Palin had made in excess of $12 million since stepping down as Alaska's governor. Yet a recent CNN pool has Obama beating her by 55% to 42% in a head-to-head battle. More worrisome for the Palin camp, 69% stated she was not qualified to be president. Obviously much can change between not and 2012, but at present there seems to be no urgency to develop a strong conservative platform with room for moderates.

For now, many view the Republicans as the party of obstructionism, with an intolerance that seems to view any form of cooperation or compromise as a type of blasphemy not to be tolerated. The Tea Party could become a truly influential movement, but without a true agenda apart from big government being a bad thing, chances are it will eventually implode or begin to splinter into various factions.

This is a perfect opportunity for the Republicans to swoop in and capitalize on the current anger and dissatisfaction in the country, but without a strategic media campaign that reaches out to and resonates with the voters; it could well be a missed opportunity.

Exalted in Due Time

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Today, the verse about the devil walking about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour has been on my mind. We have been walking through neighborhoods, passing out flyers for our upcoming Block Party. I kept thinking about how the devil is seeking to trip us up and keep us from sowing seeds of kindness, that we may reap no harvest. I want to take a look at the passage that contains the verse afore mentioned: 1 Peter 5:6-10..."Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: (7) Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. (8) Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: (9) Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. (10) But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you."

We start off being reminded to keep things in perspective...humble yourselves under the hand of God and HE will exalt you in due time...not when we deem it, but rather in His perfect time!!! Also, be mindful, that may not occur here as in earthly treasure...would you rather receive crowns above, that you can place at His feet, giving Him glory...which is definitely against our human nature to even think that!

Continuing on, we are to cast all our cares upon Him, because He cares for us. This is one of those hard-to-grasp statements...He cares for me...kinda like He calls me friend...how is that possible??? The Maker of heaven and earth wants to hear from me and likes my story...Say that last sentence out loud...made you smile, didn't it? Well, it's true!!!

Verse 8 reminds us to be careful and don't lose sight of our adversary, the devil. He is always looking for a way to make us fall...slow us down...ruin our testimony...get any victory in our life that he can. That is another reason why our time in prayer and the Word (daily) is such a must!!! Any opening we allow, he is ready to jump on...

Verse 9 continues to tell us to resist the temptations of the devil and be stedfast in your faith...knowing that the same tests occur to our brothers and sisters in Christ. This is another place to point back to verse 7...cast all your cares upon him (the Lord)

Then in the final verse of our passage today, notice that through our suffering (for a while), God will strengthen, settle, establish, and in the end perfect us...Be of good cheer, the trials only last for a short season...If you're going through a trial and the night seems as dark as it can possibly be, remember...the darkest hour means dawn is just in sight.

Please let me know if there is a special prayer I can word on your behalf today...

TOEFL SPEAKING question 4 part 2 (3 samples)

YOU WILL FIND THE TEXTS JUST A LITTLE FURTHER DOWN, AFTER THE INSTRUCTIONS. Here are 3 sample questions for the TOEFL IBT 4th speaking section. As you probably know, the speaking part of the test is divided into 6 different sections. The following video deals with the FOURTH section (Read, listen and summarize). In this question you are required to read a short passage about an academic topic (business, psychology, geology, biology etc.) You then have to listen to a lecture related to that topic. The response pattern is similar to the 3rd question because you have to first summarize BRIEFLY the text and then link it to the professors lecture. Most of the time, the professor will give examples that illustrates the content of the reading passage. The lecturers might give examples from their own lives, or provide examples from experiments that were made, studies that were conducted, etc. Your job is to LINK the text with the examples in the lecture. And here is how you should proceed: 1: You should briefly summarize the content of the reading passage. Basically state the topic and the main idea. 2: You should then get into the lecturers presentation. Remember to start that second part of your answer with a sentence CLEARLY stating that what you are about to say comes from the lecture. Use a sentence like (In the lecture, the professor discusses OR The lecturer suggests two examples in her presentation about) Just make sure that you indicate the transition between the text ...

Author Combines Wonderful Story and Environmental Issues to Produce a Great Book

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In writing an environmentally-friendly book, they were able to bring adult and child together in a new way that hasn't been known to man in a very long time. By reading this book, you will see that it has the power to rekindle any mind, young or old.

Every photograph tells a story. The story that it tells is perhaps unknown to the reader but not to the creator. The presence of the exotic pictures gives the reader so many new ideas and you can feel your imagination widening by the turning of every page. This book shows us that every child has the ability to visualize a whole new world outside of their own and that they should embrace it, not hide from it. Barry and Tracy Kane have put together a book that just might have enough influence to change our generation.

Tracy Kane majored in illustration at Philadelphia College of Art and worked
in Public Television as a commercial artist for several years. She created the highly successful "Fairy Houses Series" of children's books with her husband, Barry Kane who is a photographer.

In conclusion, by adding personal stories from real people and real 'Fairy Houses', it makes the book that much more relative. This book is a beautiful piece of art and it just might have the potential to break the barrier between humans and technology. What is it Like to Be a Lightworker?

When I was 17 two teachers gathered a group of girls together for a workshop. Teen girls can be mean; the idea was that everyone had to write down something nice about every other girl in the group. We didn't volunteer for this, it was mandatory.

We went around in a circle. When a girls' turn came, a teacher picked a note from that girls bucket of notes & read it to the group. After the teacher read what was on the paper, other girls were welcome to comment, as long as they agreed with or had something else nice to say about the girl who was being appreciated.

When my turn came, the teacher pulled a paper & read "She always acts happy. But everybody knows it's fake. She needs to stop acting so happy and get real".

It took a second to realize what had been said. Another girl yelled "that's so true- she is so fake I can't stand it. Nobody can possibly be that happy. Everybody knows she's fake".

I sat frozen then ran into the bathroom. It felt like I'd been kicked so hard in the gut that I couldn't breathe. What were they talking about? What in the hell were they talking about?

One of the teachers came into the bathroom to check on me. "No, I am not OK!" I said. This was a pivotal moment in my life.

You see, I was a happy person. Despite the emotional abuse in my family and being treated like a freak at school because I was so shy and rarely spoke, I was genuinely happy most of the time. The kind of happy that comes from inside. Clearly it didn't come from anything happening on the outside.

I trusted people unless they gave me a reason not to. I assumed the best about people, even though I was raised in a family that taught us to judge harshly and be intolerant.

For a year and a half after that incident I became tough. I was as mean as I knew how to be. I became hard. I figured that if I didn't have friends while being a nice person and if people thought my happiness was fake anyway, then maybe I could make friends if I was a bitch.

It actually kind of worked. I had a social life for the first time. I got invited to parties & learned to drink. I learned to say mean things about people and to gossip. I was negative, rude, and disrespectful. I was awful. And THAT was fake.

So I went back to being me- an authentically happy and kind person. A person who's energy radiates out to the world and has a positive influence.

The energy of a lightworker is palatable. Here are some examples that happen every day:

You're walking by a place where there are a guys working in the hot afternoon sun. You know these guys must be tired and thirsty. They are quiet. They don't notice you. Some talk amongst themselves, un-aware that you are walking by. One man looks up & makes a point to smile, his energy is different from the rest of the crew. He doesn't say anything. He's a lightworker.

You're at a Rotary lunch that your boss made you attend. You don't know anyone; you take a seat at a large table. People introduce themselves, exchange business cards and talk about their companies. When the waitress comes around to take orders, half the people keep talking and ignore the waitress, others make notes or pull out their phones to check for messages. When the server reaches a particular woman, you feel a dynamic change. The woman and the waitress are genuinely engaged. The conversation between them is notably different than with everyone else at the table. That woman is fully seeing the server & there is a positive energy exchange. Lightworker.

You're at the airport with your two little kids, flying home to visit Mom & Dad. Your husband isn't there to help. You've just been told the flight is delayed. The kids are tired and you didn't pack enough snacks to hold them over. It's too far to walk to the airport's snack bar. You know the kids will burst into tears any moment. You're barely holding your emotions in check... You look up and see a custodian mopping the floor thirty feet away. He looks at you and smiles. His smile morphs into a big old grin as he acknowledges your dilemma. He sees you. He sends you some of his energy. That's all it took. Lightworker.

I had a hard time trying to sort out how being a lightworker is different from being an empath, a psychic, an energy worker. All those things are part of me, but you can be those things without being a lightworker. And you can be a lightworker without having those other abilities.

So what is it- what is the 'essence' of lightwork? It's offering your spirit, your soul's energy, your pure love of life to the world without restriction.

A lighthouse is a signal for those at sea... a lightworker is a guiding light for other souls; holding the flame and offering encouragement despite all attempts to extinguish it.

Mercury Rapids: The Mountains of Tomorrow

Mercury Rapids: The Mountains of Tomorrow Review

The Mountains of Tomorrow is a deeply satisfying conclusion to the Mercury Rapids trilogy. Filled with action and drama it rockets the reader from secret bases in the United States to England and then off into space to battle The Others. Would the Greys survive? Will Earth survive? Who is The One? And will Bill and Anne ever be able to have a quiet cuppa?

Steven Johnson is an extremely talented writer. Reading the series I've been most impressed especially with his dialogue between the characters. In many books the interaction between the characters is flat and seems forced, but not these!

I'm looking forward to more books from this author!

Mercury Rapids: The Mountains of Tomorrow Overview

The countdown has begun and Earth is in jeopardy once more!

Bill Lewis is once again flung into events beyond his control when he learns that the evil, reptilian aliens known as the Others have begun construction of a devastating weapon on the Moon.

Can the combined forces of Earth's secret UFO agencies defeat them as they did once before? What part will Bill Lewis play in this terrifying 'war of the worlds'? And why do the enigmatic Greys continue to probe his mind?

Mercury Rapids: The Mountains of Tomorrow explosively concludes the trilogy that began with Mercury Rapids and continued with Mercury Rapids: The Thoth Imperative.

Manufacturers Help Conserve Energy With the Help of Free Solar Panels

With the advent of massive industrialization and global warming, one of the ways to retain the green world is with the help of solar panels. It requires one time installation cost and a no maintenance cost thereon. These panels work on the principal of trapping the abundant and free solar energy in the form of panels. These panels would transform the solar energy into electric energy and is used for domestic, industrial and commercial purposes.

This renewable and free source of energy is infinite. Solar panels based on our needs are manufactured by companies and they help us install the same in our homes or establishments. They vary in sizes and are usually mounted of roof tops. Imagine the hot summers and the nights without the power supply to run the air conditioners and fans. It traps the energy during the day in the form of batteries. These can be used to run all your appliances during the nights and non sunny days too.

With the installation of these panels, you will notice a drastic change in your electricity bill. The bill will be reduced to more than half its previous billing. The panels can be titled towards the direction of the sun to increase the absorption.

We have noticed a decrease in the rainfall over the years and an increase in heat. This would mean trouble to generate power. It helps to reduce the consumption of power. Scientists and environmentalists are spearheading the study of panels to help it become friendlier to the common man. The government too has taken a lot of initiatives to fund and give loans to the manufactures of the panel. With the increase in manufactures of solar panels, this will be available to all at a very economical price. Solar panels mounted on commercial establishment are given a higher rating compared to other establishment, since this is the one off ways to help conserve our environment.
